Video: ACPD cruiser strikes pedestrian in Shirlington

A pedestrian was struck by a police cruiser in the Shirlington area this morning.

The collision happened around 9 a.m. at the intersection of Arlington Mill Drive and Campbell Avenue, between Shirlington’s shops and the Four Mile Run Trail.

Traffic camera video (below), accessed via SafetyVid, shows a pedestrian running across Arlington Mill Drive in the crosswalk after a school bus stopped in the left westbound lane to allow them to cross.

An Arlington County Police Department SUV then approaches in the right westbound lane and slams on the brakes at the last second, clipping the pedestrian just before they reached the trail side of the road.

The pedestrian can be seen tumbling to the ground before popping back up. The officer driving the cruiser then gets out and checks on the pedestrian, while also radioing to dispatch to send a police supervisor and medics.

The exact nature of the pedestrian’s injuries, if any, are unknown. The scene was cleared less than a half hour later.

Several school buses can be seen on the video, likely returning to the nearby county property yard where they’re based.
