A man who had been held at the Arlington County jail for nearly a year on an attempted robbery charge died today (Monday) after an apparent medical emergency in his cell.
Tyrone Hines, 62, was pronounced dead in the emergency department at Virginia Hospital Center, the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office and Arlington County Police Department said in a joint press release this evening.
A deputy was alerted around 7:45 a.m. by an emergency call button inside Hines’ cell and found him in distress, according to the release. Jail medical staff responded and began lifesaving measures, and Arlington County Fire Department medics continued treatment when they arrived before taking Hines to the hospital.
Hines was charged with attempted robbery last July, after a man passed a note to a teller at a bank on the 800 block of N. Randolph Street in Ballston demanding cash and implying he had a gun, police said at the time. The man left without any money and drove off, and Hines was located in D.C. the next day with help from the Metropolitan Police Department, according to ACPD.
Hines was scheduled for a jury trial in October, after a series of mental exams and procedural motions since the start of the year, court records show.
Hines’ family has been notified of his passing, the release noted.
ACPD is investigating the circumstances of the death and the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner. The sheriff’s office said it will conduct a separate administrative investigation and a mortality review.
Deaths at the detention facility have drawn scrutiny in recent years. Nine people died at the jail over an eight-year span through December 2023, when a 55-year-old man was found unresponsive in the medical unit. A number of them were homeless or booked on so-called nuisance charges, and the Arlington branch of the NAACP called for a federal investigation into the deaths.
Sheriff Jose Quiroz has made a series of changes at the lockup since. ACSO took over medical care at the jail from a private contractor in November, and deputies began wearing body cameras inside the facility in April.

The Arlington County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) and Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) are providing information regarding the death of Tyrone Hines, 62, who died at Virginia Hospital Center on August 10 after experiencing an apparent medical emergency while in custody at the Arlington County Detention Facility.
At approximately 7:49 a.m., a deputy sheriff was alerted by an emergency call button activation located inside Mr. Hines’ cell. The deputy observed Mr. Hines experiencing an apparent medical emergency and immediately notified detention facility medical staff who responded and began providing emergency medical care and lifesaving measures.
Arlington County Fire Department was notified and continued emergency medical care upon arrival. Mr. Hines was transported to Virginia Hospital Center, where lifesaving efforts continued. He was subsequently pronounced deceased in the hospital’s emergency department.
Mr. Hines was booked into the Arlington County Detention Facility on July 20, 2025, and was being held on an attempted robbery charge. His family has been notified of his passing. ACSO and ACPD extend their condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
ACPD is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Hines’ death, with the full cooperation of ACSO. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death. ACSO will conduct a separate administrative investigation and mortality review of the incident.
