Arlington man, 51, arrested after gunfire at Gunston Middle School basketball court

An Arlington man has been arrested after a dispute at the Gunston Middle School basketball court erupted into gunfire last month.

Adrian Dwight Taylor, 51, has been charged with nine counts of attempted malicious wounding and several other felonies in connection with the incident, which took place around 10 p.m. on July 25.

The attack began with an argument at a basketball game and involved numerous underage victims, the Arlington County Police Department said in a press release today (Tuesday).

“The investigation determined that the suspect was participating in a basketball game with several individuals when he became involved in a verbal dispute with multiple people on the court,” police said. “Following the dispute, he retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and fired multiple rounds toward an occupied basketball court where numerous individuals, many of them juveniles, remained present.”

No injuries or property damage were reported.

Taylor fled the scene before police arrived, but authorities secured an arrest warrant following “a comprehensive criminal investigation.” He was arrested in the Arlington Ridge area, less than a mile away from Gunston Middle School, early yesterday morning.

In addition to attempted malicious wounding, Taylor faces charges of shooting on school property, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

Taylor is being held without bond. He appeared in court this morning and his next hearing is scheduled for Oct. 5.

“This remains an active criminal investigation and detectives believe there may be additional victims who have not yet been identified,” police said.

Victims, witnesses and others with information on the incident are encouraged to contact ACPD’s tip line at 703-228-4180 or [email protected], or submit information anonymously through the Arlington County Crime Solvers hotline at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
