Bargain hunters expected to fill I-66 garage tomorrow for monthly flea market

Roughly 1,500 shoppers are expected at the I-66 parking garage tomorrow (Saturday) for Arlington’s monthly flea market.

More than 150 vendors will set up across multiple levels of the covered garage, next to Washington-Liberty High School at 15th Street N. and N. Stafford Street, according to the Arlington Civitan Club. The market runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and admission and parking are free.

Furniture, household goods, antiques, vintage collectibles, artwork, jewelry, books, tools, toys, clothing, vinyl records and sports memorabilia are among what shoppers can expect to find, the club said.

The market is in its 40th anniversary season, which opened in April with the club predicting a record year and more than 10,000 shoppers across the season.

The Civitans and Arlington County started the market in 1986 as a central place for residents to sell and recycle used goods. Shoppers paid a quarter to get in back then.

“Time and again, vendors tell me it’s the premier flea market in Northern Virginia, and from everything I’ve seen, that reputation is well earned,” club volunteer Patrick Malone told ARLnow in April.

It remains the club’s largest fundraiser. Money from vendor spaces — $20 per parking spot — and refreshment sales goes to charitable causes, primarily organizations serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Shoppers who arrive early get the widest selection, while those who come closer to closing time may find vendors more willing to negotiate, according to the club. The vendors and the merchandise change month to month.

The market runs rain or shine, with most vendors inside the covered garage. Two dates remain this season after tomorrow: Saturday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 7.
