Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) members are partnering to create a circular economy for high quality recycled glass in Northern Virginia.
O-I Glass, Inc. (O-I Glass) and Strategic Materials are teaming up to create strong markets for glass in the region through a new glass recycling drop-off program. So far the Northern Virginia program, nicknamed the ‘Purple Can Club’ and modeled after a Ripple Glass program in Kansas City, has collected more than 4 million pounds of recycled glass that is now being shipped from a processing plant in Lorton, VA to one of Strategic Materials’ recycling facilities. O-I Glass completes the loop by buying recycled glass from Strategic Materials and turning it into new glass bottles at O-I Glass manufacturing plants in Danville and Toano, Virginia, which are then re-sold throughout the state.

The Marine Corps Marathon Organization (MCMO) recently concluded an investigation into the running history of a 55-year-old female participant at both the Marine Corps 17.75K and the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). The research, including photographic evidence and timing data, indicates that the runner had cheated over multiple years by not running the entire course and then claiming the rewards of a finisher.
This investigation was launched when the runner applied for membership in the MCM Runners Club, an exclusive group of runners who have officially completed five MCMs. As a result, this runner has been permanently banned from participating in any event organized by the MCMO.
Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) will host its annual Black History Month celebration of achievements and contributions to American history by African Americans with musical performances for passengers traveling through both airports each Thursday during the month of February. In addition, Dulles International Airport will celebrate Chinese New Year with a special lion dance performance on Jan. 23, 2020, at 10 a.m.
Performances at Dulles International will take place on the ticketing level, pre-security near the entrance to the East Security Checkpoint. Performances at Reagan National will take place in Terminal B/C in National Hall, across from Il Viaggio restaurant near the Terminal B information desk.
Doorways announced today that the agency’s President and CEO, Caroline Jones, MSW, will be leaving the organization in February. Since 1978, Doorways has operated at the many intersections of homelessness, poverty, and intimate partner violence, responding to community members in crisis. Jones has led the agency for nearly a decade, and served as a key leader of Doorways’ client services for the eight years prior.

Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Virginia’s record low unemployment held steady and employment levels continued to rise in November.
Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate continued at 2.6 percent in November, which is 0.2 percentage point below the rate from a year ago. According to household survey data in November, the labor force expanded for the seventeenth consecutive month by 13,326, or 0.3 percent to set a new record high of 4,441,018, as the number of unemployed decreased by 521. Household employment increased by 13,847 to set a new high of 4,324,922. Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate continues to be below the national rate, which decreased 0.1 percentage point to 3.5 percent.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is gearing up for another record holiday travel period at both Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport.
As the holidays approach, the Airports Authority expects to see heavier traffic and passenger volumes traveling through its two National Capital Region airports from now through Dec. 30, 2019 and again on Jan. 5, 2020.

Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) today introduced the Cleaner, Quieter Airplanes Act, legislation that would bolster NASA’s efforts to reduce emissions from the aviation industry while also reducing the impact of airplane noise in airport-adjacent communities.
“The Cleaner, Quieter Airplanes Act would address climate change and noise pollution from aircraft, two of the most persistent problems I hear about from Northern Virginians,” said Rep. Beyer. “As the climate crisis continues to inflict damage on American communities, Congress must look at every available option to reduce emissions, and that should include the aviation industry. In addition to being better for the planet, this legislation will also lead to quieter skies above and peace of mind to communities near airports. I appreciate the support for this bill on both sides of Capitol Hill, and will be making the case for it in the House as our Committee takes up NASA’s authorizing legislation.”
