They fell short of repeating as girls region cross-country champions, but the Yorktown Patriots ran well enough to finish runner-up and earn a berth into the upcoming state meet.

With 61 points, the Langley Saxons won the 6D North Region high-school event Nov. 6 on the 2.98-mile Burke Lake Park course. Runner-up Yorktown scored 88.

At significant cross-country races on the Burke Lake Park course this fall, Emmett Engelhardt has won two, with another still to come.

His latest victory on that 2.98-mile trail was on a warm Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 30) at the boys Liberty District high-school championship meet.

The Bishop O’Connell Knights had middle-of-the-pack finishes at conference cross-country championship meets, but saw positive signs in the performance of ninth-grade runners.

The girls placed sixth and the boys eighth at the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference races, run Saturday (Oct. 26) on the 5,000-meter Kenilworth Park course in D.C.

With a top runner missing from each team, the Bishop O’Connell Knights didn’t finish as high in the team standings as hoped.

The O’Connell boys placed fourth and the girls sixth at the Virginia Catholic State Championships held Oct. 22 on the 5,000-meter cross-country course at Occoquan Regional Park on a hot afternoon.

Led by a tight pack of runners, the Washington-Liberty Generals won a recent showcase cross-country meet.

The high-school team tallied 152 points to finish first in the girls elite race at the Oct. 19 Virginia Showcase meet in Mechanicsville, near Richmond.

Two tall refurbished trophies, named for individuals for the first time, were presented to the winning girls and boys high-school teams at this year’s annual Arlington County cross-country championship meets the afternoon of Sept. 24 at Bluemont Park.

The girls trophy is now named for former Washington-Liberty High School director of student activities Carol Callaway. The boys is named for former longtime Yorktown High School cross country coach Mark Stripe, who coached Yorktown for more than 25 years.

Through three races this fall, Anthony Lenzini has established himself as a top runner for his college team.

The Bishop O’Connell High School graduate is a sophomore on the Division I University of San Diego men’s cross-country squad.

Bishop O’Connell High School graduate Molly Weithman already is making a strong impact in college cross country.

The freshman runner for the College of William and Mary’s Division I women’s team finished ninth in one of her first collegiate races. Her place helped the team win a championship with a low 19 points Oct. 5 at the Pirate Invitational at East Carolina University.

For Emmett Engelhardt, the cross country season keeps getting better and better.

The high-school campaign is a little more than a month old and the Washington-Liberty Generals senior runner already has won three big races, the latest Oct. 5 at the Octoberfest Invitational on the Great Meadow course in The Plains.
