Morning Poll: Ode to April

by ARLnow.com | April 4, 2011 at 9:11 am | 1,069 views | 53 Comments

This site is often a venue for serious debate about (mostly) serious issues. Which is fine — although we wish some folks would play a little nicer in the comments section.

On a day like today, however, with the sun shining, plants in bloom, and people enjoying the nice weather, maybe a less serious question is in order.

…getting spanked by the MLS champs. Ouch.

      • Overgrown Bush

        ’twas ugly.

      • Black Flag

Yeah, that hurt. This weekend against LA, should be a good one.

  • CW

Why is “the start of brown flip-flop season” not an option?

    • JamesE

      My hairy feet are ready

    • charlie

      ugh.
i saw a big dude outside the Westin Ballston yesterday. All wrapped up for the cold yet somehow he had on brown flipflops. And huge skanky feet. I’m like, dude, this is one of the nicest hotels in the area and you look like the unabomber. and i thought, oh gawd, it is time for flipflops again. UGH.

      • mehoo

Saw a couple Saturday night, fairly chilly, both be-flipflopped. Plus the bonus of way-too-long jeans that were oh-so-hiply worn down in the back by the heels.

  • JamesE

Finally start driving without fear of fishtailing or Tokyo drifting.

    • LyonSteve

      +1 agreed.

And the rest of Arlington with summer tires will wonder why they have so much traction with the return of warm weather.

      • JamesE

I just assume 90% of them don’t realize their cars are RWD with summer tires, makes for great laughs in cold rain or snow.

        • http://arlingtondirt.blogspot.com TGEoA

The vast majority of cars on the road use all-season tires. Summer tires are usually for high performance sports cars.

          • JamesE

all season tires are equally as useless in cold wet weather.

          • Vik

A good pair of all-seasons are not equally as useless in cold and wet weather compared to summer tires and most stock all-seasons.

          • Overgrown Bush

I drive around all year with a set of studded snow tires on my Prius. I don’t want to take any chances.

          • JamesE

I have a set of drag radials on my nissan leaf.

        • CW

Anything “M” or “S” or with a “sport package” option likely comes with summer tires. That is a large number of cars in arlington.

          • JamesE

328i coupe (Arlington vehicle of choice) does indeed come with summer tires, at least according to tirerack.com

          • CW

Only with the sport package – wheels and tires are the big upgrade with that option.

          • LyonSteve

My unscientific survey has shown that a large percentage have the sport package, so there you go.

          • JamesE

I guess that is a must for racing down fairfax dr.

    • CW

+1 as well. Although I will miss seeing RWD luxury cars sunk up to the axles in snow with their owners crying into their cell phones.

      • JamesE

It just amazes me how people have no idea what the limits of their vehicle are. I have driven once in the snow and only because it started half way through my commute home and I thought I was going to die yet still some how managed to drive better than most of the giant SUVs on the road.

        • CW

My favorite memory of this past winter was going down to the intersection of washington blvd and kirkwood during the big snowstorm and watching it fill with stranded cars. It’s a low point for 3 of the 4 roads leading to the intersection…once they got down there, there was no way out…

  • Bluemontsince1961

Finally putting away the winter coats, getting out the light jackets and enjoying the finally-already-what-took-so-long warmer temperatures. Go spring!

    • Maria

… for a week until it hits 90 every day :)

  • Overgrown Bush

My vote would be for women in sundresses.

    • CrystalMikey

Oh, like the huge ones that hide most of their face? :p

      • AllenB

Wouldn’t those be hats? Or are you talking what happens after a gust of wind?

        • CrystalMikey

Damn, I thought that said sunglasses for some odd reason. Mikey needs coffee (and the ability to delete posted comments). haha

      • Overgrown Bush

        Uh, no.

    • Southeast Jerome

      you mean sundress sillies!

  • Lou

Food. Ham for Easter, and the start of crab season.

  • http://www.ClarendonCulture.com Amy Moore (Clarendon Culture)

Sundresses, live music in the Common, bustling farmers markets, the long afternoon walks to my favorite food trucks, and evening walks for fro yo or ice cream, . I’m SO excited.

  • CrystalMikey

The ramp up of a race season (5Ks and beyond).

  • Southeast Jerome

wearing brown flip flops at a rooftop yuppie bar double fisting pizza and fro-yo after I sped past all the lyon village parents in my leased BMW 3-series because I live on my credit card

    • CW

You mean after you sped past them looking for a parking spot in front of one of their houses so you didn’t have to pay to park in the garage next to the rooftop yuppie bar, right?

      • Southeast Jerome

Yeah I forgot to mention that…. I thought it was just assumed that all young people in Arlington are the same and they all speed through neighborhoods on their leased BMW’s, throw their 4 loko’s in front yards and then spend $400 at the bar on their credit card. But somehow can still afford to pay $1900 a month in rent for a 1 bedroom. Bizarre.

  • bennynojets

I am not a fan of April. Taxes, allergies, and tourists clogging the metro.

    • mehoo

      Sourpuss.

    • Overgrown Bush

You pay taxes year round, and the metro is clogged all the time. So, only allergies make April any different.

      • mehoo

I’m allergic to mold and cats as well as pollen, so life sucks all year.

I think I shouldn’t have to pay taxes.

      • LyonSteve

        Only poor people pay taxes.

        • Overgrown Bush

Actually, the lowest-earning ~50% pay no federal tax at all.

          • Maria

            Neither does G.E.

          • http://www.solcomhouse.com/images/exxon_valdez.jpg E. Valdez

            Neither does Exxon-Mobil.

    • http://arlingtondirt.blogspot.com TGEoA

You know Allegra is sold OTC now? Good stuff.

    • Carmen

I do my taxes in February and don’t have any allergies(for which I am very thankful). But I agree about the tourists. They are annoying.

  • Tabby

I have fall allergies. What’s this “Masters” thing–some golfing bollox?

  • barlington

    no love for hockey playoffs?

    • Northerner

      Yes. +10

    • http://arlingtondirt.blogspot.com/ TGEoA

What is red white and blue and plays golf in May?

  • GMo

This cold wimp can’t wait to get back out on my bicycle after a winter of excessive holiday food and general sloth. Going to try to get as many charity rides in as possible this summer.
