County Concludes Vacuum Leaf Collection

Arlington County has concluded its annual vacuum leaf collection service.

Though the vacuum trucks have stopped running, Arlington will continue its biodegradable leaf bag collection service — which takes place on the next business day after your normal trash collection day — through Jan. 13.

The county is asking residents to fill out a survey to provide feedback about this year’s vacuum leaf collection.

    Not much of a survey.

  • JimPB:

Got to the essence, and then ended. Bravo. (Apparently no one in ARLCo environmental services needs to fill their time preparing a lengthy survey and then writing up a report with the results.)

    • Lauren:

I thought the survey was going to ask if I thought they did a good job picking up leaves.

Although they did pick up many leaves in my neighborhood, it was done only once – very late in the season – and the streets started to become hazardous. Folks piled up their mounts on the streets and they were not visible at night. On windy days, many of the piles but disintegrated.

Seems to me they could have picked up leaves at least twice this fall.

  • Sam Cottrell:

I am furious at the county! I placed my second batch of leaves at the curb only after checking the interactive map which clearly showed a single red line for my street. It showed red for several days after the pile was there. Now it shows green but the leaves are still there. I will leave them there forever. The people running this lame system are inept.

Sam Cottell: Call or e-mail ARLCo Department of Environmental Services.
I have found these good folks to be VERY responsive.

my street got hit the day BEFORE it was scheduled.

people should just rake their leaves into a compost pile anyways.

      • JimPB:

For the first time I used my electric mower to chop the leaves into little pieces. This took significantly less time than raking and hauling the leaves to the street for collection, and my garden and plants get the benefit now of this enrichment from the leaves.

  • Suburban Not Urban:

Take the survey – make sure they keep putting up the signs – we got 2 passes on the days the signs said they would be there.

Anyone hear what to do about Christmas tree disposals?
