Carlin Springs Road Still Blocked After Accident

by ARLnow.com June 3, 2010 at 3:10 pm 1,778 9 Comments

Carlin Springs Road is still closed between North Glebe Road and Vermont Street after a utility pole collapsed, sparked a fire and knocked out power to nearly 2,000 homes and businesses.

Crews from Dominion, Verizon and Comcast are still working to fix the mess. No word yet on whether the road will reopened by the evening rush hour.

Actually, two utility poles were knocked down.

    • It did appear that at least two poles were replaced. Here’s a grainy photo someone took after the accident: http://twitpic.com/1te1rl

Yeah. That one had a transformer on it.

Heading away from Ballston, the next pole down from the one in the pic was split in half with the lower half lying in the road and the upper half suspended in mid-air as a result of it still being connected to the power lines.

It looked like quite a mess at the time. I’m not surprised it is taking this long to clean up.

You rock Arlnow! Screw the SunGazette!

I’m trying to think through the mechanics of that.

Just FYI this was not caused by a vehicle striking any of the involved poles. The pole with the 3 transformers failed half way up and then fell onto Carlin Springs Road and subsequently pulled down the pole on the corner of Thomas Street.

yeah i didnt think there was any vehicle involved. the pole just rotted or something.

    • Word from the county was a vehicle accident, but that could have been wrong. I’ll change the story to reflect that.
