Police Use Taser on Suspect at Best Buy in Pentagon City

Paramedics are heading to the Best Buy in Pentagon City after police used a Taser on a disorderly suspect.

The suspect was not reported to be injured — it’s standard procedure for medics to evaluate anyone who has been Tasered by an officer.

From your link: “the officer used his Taser . . after Bumbrey became aggressive and refused to respond to spoken orders”

It’s not necessarily the crime committed that determines what force is used but the behavior of the suspect. Someone getting a parking ticket could act in a way that results in Taser use while someone being arrested for rape and murder could be completely compliant and require no force to effect an arrest.

Asking why Arlington police use Tasers on shoplifting suspects is an uninformative question.

        “an uninformative question” LOL

        WTF does that mean?

@PurpleFlipFlops: The article you linked doesn’t indicate that the suspect was even struck by the taser probes. He was still aggressive and required 2 cops to subdue him leading me to believe the taser didn’t hit him or malfunctioned. Seeing as he robbed a pharmacy, he could have very well died of a drug related condition. Regardless, the answer to your question is also found on your link:

I was actually in the Best Buy at the time (buying Toy Story 3 no less), and heard a commotion by the door. Dude kept saying “you can’t kick me out”, “I want my Playstation 3” to cop. Cop was just trying to get him to leave store and talk when suspect motioned a punch at the officer. Suspect then decided to walk farther into store…at which point he was told halt, he didn’t, so he got the taste of taser.

Did he get his Playstation 3?

      • MikeyinCrystalC

Only if Arlington Co. has one in the lockup.

What did the cops use before the Taser came into being? Wouldn’t they arrest the “bad guy” versus killing him with the Taser?

I’m just asking a question as a man is dead because he became unruly????

    • PurpleFlipFlops

I share the same question. I thought tasers were supposed to be a measure of last resort to deadly force (gun shots.) If this is the case, would this man have been shot if the officer did not have a taser?

    • Captain Obvious

um, he’s not dead. he’s uninjured.

In the old days they probably would have pulled out a billy club or drew a gun. Tasers are supposed to be somewhere in-between the two – reduces the risk of a cop being on the losing end of a physical struggle, but is far less deadly than a gun (which also carries the risk of an officer missing and shooting a bystander).

The taser is supposed to be non-lethal – it’s meant to subdue so they can make an arrest. That’s not 100% guaranteed obviously, but there’s no guarantee getting cracked over the head with a club or shot at like the good old days wouldn’t be lethal either.

Taser was made so that officers and people being arrested suffered fewer injuries. Prior to the taser, this subject would have been tackled, pepper sprayed, or blown up with a hand grenade.

Clearly this taser saved this mans life.

Rodney King wishes the TASER was around in his day!
