Morning Poll: Least Least Attractive?

by ARLnow.com November 15, 2010 at 8:05 am 1,505 23 Comments

Travel + Leisure magazine recently published a list of America’s most and least attractive cities. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the much-maligned D.C. area ranked near the bottom of the list, as the country’s #6 least attractive city.

But does Arlington share the blame for the ugliness? If you take a walk around Clarendon on a Friday night, do you find the bar-goers more or less attractive than, say, the bar-goers walking around Adams Morgan on a Friday night?

For the purposes of this poll, let’s narrow the scope down to people in their 20s, 30s and 40s. And while you can make your case for another area’s abundance of attractiveness in the comments, we’re only considering the District and Arlington for this poll.

  • Arlington, Northside

I disagree with Travel and Leisure. While we do not have the models of New York or want to be stars of LA, we have a great turnover of young good looking interns and other patriots wanting to help our nation. The folks here are as good looking as anywhere in America, it is just when we leave the house we put the substance of our thoughts and work over the style of our clothes and outward appearance.

    • Arlingtron

Looks is not a high priority here. Power is more important. We ask the Hollywood types to dress the set when necessary. Like NYC black seems to be the standard uniform but people inside the Beltway just don’t wear it as well.

Having lived and worked in New York, Denver, Milan, Paris, Munich, I have to agree with the travel and leisure article. People here do not take care of them selves or really care about their appearance. It is just that way it is here. Conformity is rewarded and mediocrity is the norm.

    • Aaron

Yep, I won’t comment on the male half of the population here, but everyone knows that DC-area women just dress to look rich, not to look good.

      • Deb

“Everyone knows”?? I never got that memo.

  • JamesE

I vote for #1 in stuck up people with horrible attitudes.

  • NJmetsfan

I think that there are plenty of hot women in Arlington! Now I just need a way so I can look at the women without my girlfriend slapping me…

    • brian

must mean your gf isn’t that great to look at. sorry, it was by your own admission.

  • Dood

I am sure the results of this poll won’t be biased at all.

  • Lala

What about the DC guys??? Nice khaki pants and flip flops…ugh. Frat boy chic is not hot unless you are still in college.

    • Darwin

Agreed, part of the problem is the total and complete lack of style sense in the DC area. As a guy if you make the slightest effort on your appearance you are recognized around here as a fashion icon where as you would still be the bottom of the heap in NYC and Chicago.
Also the poll is flawed, many of the people you see in DC bars are Arlington party go-ers where as essentially no one at the Arlington bars are from DC because they are stuck up and refuse to believe there is anything worthwhile across the river. My DC friends act as if they need to renew their passport before making the arduous 3 metro stop journey into our foreign land!

      • JD32

Your DC friends aren’t stuck up. It’s because, outside of one or two bars in Clarendon, they’re right.

  • Vik

I don’t think DC should be high, but 6th worse seems a bit far down as well. I think we’re more close to mediocre than bad, if that makes things better. The magazine says we’ve moved up from last, where we were last year. I don’t care to read much into the methodology, but from the surface, I think I disagree with their findings.

  • Katie

Are you all kidding me?! DC is renowned for gorgeous women, not so much the men.

Compare it to Boston–where I see couples and think, errr, he’s hot; she’s not! Here it’s definitely the other way around.

Sour grapes dudes up the line there.

  • NorthAdams

DC-area people are some of the worst dressed professionals out there. And then casually they are even worse. Too many posers. Too many power hungry. Give me a well dressed woman or man anyday and they will have more power than seeing your name or project listed in the federal register.
looking good is powerful. too bad NO ONE in DC really dresses that well.

  • Vik

Well, a lot of the cities that people around here apparently wish they were didn’t fare all that well on this list either…

Not to mention they factor in friendliness and stuff like that, which had a negative impact on NYC.

  • westcoastgirl

“dc is renowned for gorgeous women.” ***bursts out laughing

    • Katie

yea, no implants, tacky outdated bleach jobs, fake tans, and ditziness.

  • MikeyinCrystalC

Meh, I’ve lived in multiple spots around the world, and the DC area is in my top 5 in terms of attractive women. Just stop wearing Uggs already!

  • Lala

DC men not in top 5 that’s for sure.

  • Courthouse

I agree with the frat boy chic not being hot at all – crocs, college sweatshirts, flip-flops, huge school rings, and plaid shorts (that look like boxers worn as outerwear)…ugh.

  • ugly men

There are hot woman and all of them have ugly husbands/boyfriends. As a woman you def have to date down in the city/Arlington. The guys are pretend cool but very ugly.

    • brian

sounds like u r jealous and are still single and dissin anyone who isn’t size 4 or less.
