They’re calling it “Saturday night, one day early.”

Rosslyn’s outdoor film festival returns to Gateway Park on Friday, and this year’s theme is “Saturday Night Live performers.” Every Friday night from now until August 26, different movies starring different Saturday Night Live stars will be shown on a big inflatable screen.

The movies get underway just after dusk — about 8:00 p.m. After 6:00 p.m., parking is available for $3 at 1901 and 1911 N. Fort Myer Drive, across the street from the park.

“Movie-goers are encouraged to bring blankets and low chairs to picnic in the park,” Rosslyn BID said today in a press release. “Attendees should arrive early for the best seating, and for pre-show games and prizes.”

Last year’s theme was “I [Heart] The 90’s.”

They almost found me near VA Square!

  • Eponymous Coward

I like the new skin for the site but it seems slow to load. It that just me?

I’m fairly certain that “Spaceballs” was one word. Space Balls sounds like an embarrassing Martian condition.

  • Censored?

Anyone know if they only show the clean versions of these movies? That list has quite a few movies with nudity and big boy words.

  • Matt

Good list though Spaceballs has no SNL alum in it, not sure how it made the cut. Can’t believe they passed on Ghostbusters!

    • Eponymous Coward

John Candy and Rick Moranis’s IMDB entries both list SNL. Perhaps those were guest appearances. I rarely watched, so I don’t recall.

I second you on Ghostbusters. Perhaps they couldn’t get the rights.

  • South Arlington

It’s still inexcusable to leave off Norm Macdonald’s timeless classic Dirty Work.

Cinematic classic Hot Rod is certainly a welcome and unexpected addition though.

    • Matt

Good call on Dirty Work, just watched it again over the weekend and it holds up great — and not only does it have Norm, but Chevy as well.

    no waynes world? denied?

    • wat

      too soon
was in last years 90’s list

  • BetterLateThanNever

John Candy and Rick Moranis were SCTV alum’s, but only did guest appearances on SNL. They were not cast members…

*Please note that Gateway Park is an Arlington County park and alcohol consumption is not permitted on the premises….. BOOOOOO (Bring a flask)

    • Grumpy

      RJ:
I wish to correct this assumption on your part. The park in Clarendon over the Metro and Gateway Park in Rosslyn are the 2 parks that the County issues permits for ETOH consumption…Whether they will for this event, who knows??

      • imissTX

It says on the website: “*Please note that Gateway Park is an Arlington County park and alcohol consumption is not permitted on the premises.”

So yes – a flask it is.

        • South Arlington

I seem to remember that as soon as it gets dark you start hearing a chorus of corks popping around Gateway Park. I think as long as you aren’t conspicuous about it, it isn’t a problem.

  • Arlington

Does anyone know if dogs are okay for the event?
