Volunteer Opp: AHC Seeking Teen Tutors

by ARLnow.com September 2, 2011 at 9:14 am 2,682 12 Comments

Students in Arlington Public Schools head back to the classrooms on Tuesday.  Not all of them are fully prepared for the school year, but you can help.

AHC Inc., an affordable housing developer, needs several dozen volunteers to tutor middle and high school teens. Tutors get paired with a student for the academic year and meet up once a week for 90 minutes at one of the program’s six locations. Several of the locations are Metro accessible.

More help is needed this year than in the past because the program has expanded the number of nights per week that tutoring is available to the teens.

The Teen Tutor orientation takes place on September 14 and 15. To get involved with the program, click here for the registration form. To request more information, contact Jennifer Cavaliere, [email protected] or 703-486-0626 x 154.

I can say I did this last year and I’m a big fan

You may think you’re extending a kindness, Ameer and others. The problem is that, if you provide it, they will come. Then I and everyone in Lyon Village have to deal with the aftermath (e.g. Views at Clarendon).

I’m sad Abby failed to derail this when that church came to the School Board needing Reed School to take the day care (and make this happen). She could have refused usage of the school, delaying construction and hopefully making it collapse once and for all as the funding grants dried up. Instead she stood down, even though her own friends and neighbors had sacrificed time, talent and treasure to stop these people. I lost much respect for her after that.

Oops–by “this”, I mean Views at Clarendon. Although certainly I’d shed not a drop of tears if this “tutoring” program went away.

        WTF are you talking about?!

+1 Tabby. I did this last year and it was great experience, and really helped the kids.

Your comment sounds more like a hostile and pointless rant that doesn’t make much sense. Perhaps you could use some tutoring on character-building, civility and kindness.

        • Tabby

Now that would be a pointless exercise.

Thurston, this forum surely is too lightweight for your talents. Go back to washingtonpost.com and spam the comments sections with anti-Obama rants, regardless of topic.

I’m interested in this program, anyone know the hours when tutoring is provided?

    • Tabby

Last year it was 6:30-8 pm, and you had your choice of location and night of the week–I think Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday.

  • Shari

I filled out the form just now and they provide you with the information/locations, here they are:

    * Fort Henry on Mondays from 6-7pm, Tuesdays 6:30-8pm or Thursdays 6:30-8pm
    * Gates of Ballston on Thursdays from 6:30-7:30pm
Harvey Hall on Mondays or Wednesdays from 6-7:15pm
    * Berkeley on Wednesdays or Thursdays from 6:30-8pm
    * Virginia Gardens on Mondays or Wednesdays from 7-8pm
    * Woodbury Park on Thursdays from 6:30-8pm

Come on, Thurston! Just think: If you volunteer, you’ll be able to hold that out forever in your comments by saying, “Look, I volunteer my time to help the children of these people, but let me tell you — ” Think of the street cred you’ll have!
