A new Virginia ABC liquor store is coming to Columbia Pike’s emerging central business district.

Interior construction is about to get underway at the future store, which is located at 2940 Columbia Pike, next to Lost Dog Cafe.

Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control spokeswoman Jennifer Farinholt confirmed that the space will indeed be used by a state liquor store, but was unable to provide any other details. No word yet on when the store might open.

Hmmm. This makes me wonder whatever happened to McDonnell’s proposal to sell off the ABC stores?

It has all been very well documented, if you search the google.

      • CrystalMikey

        but I don’t wanna!

It’s always nice to get a reminder of another lame hypocritical rightwing budget gimmick though.

Or not. It would have likely been a great deal. I would then start purchasing liquor in Virginia – right now, I buy it in DC where there are more options and better prices.

the economic analysis that was done was static scoring meaning it made no concessions to people making dynamic decisions i.e. like me.

second, even under static scoring it was 48 million in lost revenue over 2 years or 24 a year which works out to less than .01% of the overall budget.

except they were also going to raise taxes so that prices would be roughly the same, and were still going to have lower net revenues.

Yup, a nice giveaway to the private sector.

It’s better to have a state monopoly on sales of hard liquor than to have it available in every grocery store across the Commonwealth. Do we want to be like Maryland…where liquor stores figured heavily in the Prince Georges County bribery scandal???

  • Erin

I am more excited about this than most anything else coming to the Pike!

Me too! There is a god and she likes liquor!

Do you think they’ll add a drive through window, at least for single- serving-sized bottles? I get my oxy that way at Walgreens, and I hate being too (hiccup!) wasted get out of the car.

Speaking of new stuff in this area, is Taqueria Poblano ever going to start building out their space?

    • PikeHoo

No kidding. I’ve been waiting for this place to open for months.

    FINALLY!!!! YAY!!!

  • G Clifford Prout

Now I can stumble up to get refills. No more having to sober up to drive to the nearest ABC.

Put it in the Artisphere building and rename it The AlcoSphere.

My initial reaction was – Oh no! What a waste of a slot. But then I saw it was up next to the Lost Dog and wasn’t as disappointed. Still – a liquor store is hardly something to get excited about. It’s like a dry cleaner or something equally as boring and generic.

    • Novadweller

Yeah I hate when they open stores in my community that were not easily accessible via walking before. That’s the worst. Like the Giant? Who wants a grocery store they can walk to… boooorrring. Let’s put in a boutique that I’ll never frequent instead.

Bro a ABC store is a money making store. With it being in that location with a lot of foot traffic it will be a success

  • PikeHoo

This will be a nice improvement from having to go to the Ballston ABC, although I feel like an ABC store is only one step up from another crummy 7-11.

  • Narlington

thats what south arlington needs another ABC store. How about a detox center.

I don’t understand your post. This mid-section of S Arl needs an ABC — like others, I’m glad it fills a need, and yeah, I’ll walk to it. I imagine a good several thousand people can walk to (and from) this location.

    • Steve85

If it was north arlington it would be over 100 comments with people loving the idea but since its south arlington its a problem. Grow up people

Sooo… while Crystal City gets a “wine shop”, the Pike gets a “liquor store”. Nice. I take it they couldn’t find a suitable location in Lyon Village or Yorktown. What are the county ordinances on public drunkenness and open containers?

    • GentriSUCKation

Why would they need a wine store on the pike? There is already a wine bar where the patrons can look out the window and give dirty looks to the latinos waiting for the bus.

    • FYI

Actually, the two ABC stores I know of in N. Arlington are near those areas you named: The one in Courthouse is not far from Lyon Village, and the one on Lee Highway is about a mile from Yorktown HS, between Lee Heights and Country Club.
