Arlington Kid Up for ‘Goal of the Year’ Honors

An Arlington boy’s long-distance goal has him in the running for the U.S. Youth Soccer ‘Goal of the Year.’

Mateo Leach’s remarkable, game-winning goal for the Under-12 Boys Arlington Eagles was caught on video by his dad. The goal, which broke a 1-1 tie with five minutes left in the game, was eventually chosen by U.S. Youth Soccer as one of the top ten goals of 2011, and is now nominated for the honor of Goal of the Year.

Through Feb. 10, members of the public can vote for Leach’s goal. He’s got tough competition, though, including amazing goals by boys and girls from Frederick, Md. to Anaheim, Calif. to Kaneohe, Hawaii.

Goal Of The Year? hahahahahahahahahhahaha! Thanks I needed a laugh this morning. Kid kicks ball… ball goes in goal.

    • Kathleen

Hey Everyone – this is a 12 Year Old you are commenting on. I believe the people that put out the film were simply hoping for some “Home Town” support. Definitely not a reason to get nasty – view and vote as you feel fit.

      • DudeGuy

I am not commenting on a 12 year old. I am commenting on the video of the goal. No one is getting nasty, calm down Kathleen 🙂

  • TG3oA

Nice goal, but even nicer pass.

  • Doodly

Not even the best goal posted on this website all year.

    • DudeGuy

I agree, Look at U10 William Auerweck @ the 0:48 sec mark, that go my vote.

  • ArlForester

I was expecting something from midfield, not the top of the box.

  • ArlForester

It looks like spreading the word is working and the Arlington kid is winning.

    • TG3oA

Shame, because there are a lot of far superior goals in that list.

  • Bonissa Meldi

Best goal in the bunch was from William Auerweck.

  • Well, it is a nice shot. But the goalkeeper is WAY out of position.

  • Josh S

Yeah, if he wins it will be travesty. Those other teams better start pumping the local internet quick.

Agree that the William Auerwick goal is the best.

  • DarkHeart

    Is this Fields Park?

    • bobco85

Dangit, you got to it first! I think it is Fields Park.

  • E

nice goal, hope this doesn’t win because that means American Soccer sucks and we will NEVER win the World Cup!

  • James

    Top 10…are you kidding me?

Man, we really are blowing #%^$* up kid’s ^*&^#$ these days.

Did he also get a trophy for that?

    • DudeGuy

Everyone got a trophy and no one kept score… THEY ALL WIN IN LIFE!

      • Don’t forget the team party, with cake and ballons, celebrating the 1-9 season.

      • Louise

    • E

Yep that was not that great, I would be sad if that won

  • Swag

Well that was a f**king disappointment.

    • Good Grief

Its impressive for a 12 y/o ya big grouch.

Put a sock in it, jerks.

    Yay, Mateo!

  • Carolyn

I think it’s creepy that people were taping all of these games/goals. Why do you need videos of elementary/middle school soccer games?

    • Quoth the Raven

What’s creepy about taping your son or daughter’s soccer game?

  • ArlingtonWay

Uh, its a 10 year old kid. How about STFUing with the negative comments you dbags?

  • Car-Free-Diet

Uh, it’s the “Arlington Way” to be a dbag. Arlington is full of dbags. If you took all the dbags out of Arlington what would be left? A large pack of dogs!

  • I’d be just as proud as the father was if it was my son. Great goal!

  • nom de guerre

I will support him because he is local, just like I support other local teams (Redskins, Capitals, Nationals, Wizards) in spite of the fact that there are many better teams out there at the present time.

  • RFK since the Dips

What ever happened to a little civic pride?

  • MomofTeens

I’ve said it before on this site, and I’ll say it again, as did GoodGrief,..people who comment on here, especially when it comes to kids (see comments re: student decal contest) are SUCH GROUCHES (actually they are grouches even when they’re not commenting about kids…)

  • Joe

Is that one of the Leach kids? Had a few older brothers?

    • I think you know

One older brother who died. Please stop it.

  • Brendan

I don’t know whether it’s because of this blog or people realize how great it is but Mateo’s goal is running away with it!
