Major Closures Planned on Route 50

VDOT crews are preparing for a number of significant road closures as a result of the ongoing Route 50/Courthouse Road interchange project.

Westbound Route 50 will be completely closed between Courthouse Road and 10th Street from 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 24 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 25. The closure is being put into place to allow the demolition of the bridge from 10th Street to eastbound Route 50. During the demolition process, drivers will be encouraged to avoid the closure area and use Washington Boulevard as a detour to Route 50. The 10th Street bridge itself will close starting on Thursday, March 22.

Longer-term closures are also planned starting next week.

The ramp from westbound Route 50 to N. Fairfax Drive (between Courthouse Road and 10th Street) will close starting on March 22, as will the stretch of Fairfax Drive between Scott Street and Courthouse Road that runs parallel to Route 50. Both closures will be in place “until work nears completion in fall 2013,” according to VDOT.

VDOT will put detours in place during the closures.

In place of the bridge from 10th Street to eastbound Route 50, drivers can use Washington Boulevard to North Pershing Drive back to Route 50 as a detour. Instead of the ramp from westbound Route 50 to Fairfax Drive, drivers can use 10th Street as a detour.

Maps of the detours are available from the VDOT project website.

God my life is going to suck for a really long time.

    • Glebe Roader

      Too easy. He’s inviting comments.

      • novasteve

It’s not going to be finished until the fall of 2013. That’s 1.5 years of 10th street being a nightmare.

    • Swag

      Sheffield Court?

    • Hope

      Mine too!

  • Brian K

I really hope they retime those lights from Pershing onto 50 — or that is going to be one heck of a clusterf

    • Swag

I hope they pave that part of Pershing first. What a mess.

The Cab Driver who drive me down that stretch recently said he had never seen a road as bad as that in his life.
          He was from Beirut

          • NPGMBR

If you’re driver thinks thats the worst hes seen then it hasn’t traveled much. That stretch of Pershing is pretty bad now as are most streets ajacent to new construction but it will be repaired by the time the major construction is over.

      • nom de guerre

Everytime I drive that stretch of Pershing I have flashbacks where I hear the sounds of automatic weapon fire and Apache and Black Hawk helos.

      • novasteve

Yeah, I almost get seasick on that part of pershing when I drive to eastern carryout from 50.

    • NPGMBR

You are so right! I don’t mind the delays because of overall benefit of the improved interchange but that light at Pershing and Rt 50 gives too little time to the traffic on Pershiing.

  • CW

Let’s grab some beers and lawn chairs and go watch them knock down that bridge! I wonder if the equipment operators will sell a few minutes at the controls for a $20…

    • CourthouseChris

I would definitely pay that $20.

      • CW

I will miss it though. One of the few places where you have a justified reason for a good hard 0-60 launch, with some wheelspin for effect if you desire.

        • novasteve

Yeah, I think my mileage will go up now that I won’t have to do that anymore.

        • Tre

I prefer perpetually waiting behind the petrified soccer mom(dad?) too scared to accelerate at all even when all the cars on 50 are in the middle and right lanes.

          • CW

To be fair though, a good 30-50% of those cars in the middle and right lanes would definitely be cutting over to the Court House Road exit sans turn signal at the last minute, so I was often in that boat as well.

          • whatever

Agreed. Turn signals onto courthouse road are rare, and the angry drivers beeping from behind you can really help.

it’s not as if 90% of the drivers don’t do that every day.

  • nunya

speaking of 50….anyone know when all that work at 50 and on Glebe will be done.

  • G Clifford Prout

    Goodness. I’ve been moderated.

    • CourthouseChris

Happened today to me too; I think he’s taking a harder line… pretty innocuous comment too.

      • G Clifford Prout

Was it my inclusion of a web link?

        • CourthouseChris

Uhh… depends on where it pointed I guess 😉

  • K Mac

I hope they are planning to extend the green-light time for people who need to now use the light at Pershing and Rt 50. There are going to be 20-30 cars per green lined up waiting to go now. The ramp from 10th was easily 15-20 cars deep on some mornings, and that’s with them being able to scoot out into gaps on 50. This is going to be a nightmare.

    • Brian K

I’ve already said this same point above .. Please read previous comments before going off topic so we can have one standard thread

  • WeiQiang

This could all be avoided if we had a trolley …

  • R Hill

Nice that they finally updated the closure for the Fairfax Drive ramp. The flashing sign still says it will be closed only until March 2, 2012. Funny thing is that it’s still closed and I find it hard to believe the closing will actually “start” March 21. Kudos VDOT.

  • Just Me

I look forward to be better entrance to Rt 50 from 10th street and it best be effing great if it’s going to take 18 months. Not looking forward to finding a new way to work.
