Castro’s Bakery Closed in Bluemont

The Bluemont location of Castro’s Bakery is no more.

The family-owned bakery closed about a month ago, we’re told. Signs have been taken down from the storefront at 5515 Wilson Boulevard and all equipment has been removed from the interior.

An employee at Castro’s Seven Corners location (6276 Arlington Blvd, Falls Church) confirmed that that location has remained open. So far, there’s no official word on why the Arlington location closed.

Of course the greatest retail mystery for that neighborhood is how the Safeway has remained unchanged since the first George Bush was president.

Forget the awful lighting and ancient shelving. Don’t they know that a puny Starbucks inside would make a fortune just based on the plentiful parking?

It’s basically just an extended parking lot for Pupatella.

Things have a way of working out.

      • Tabs

        I love Pupatella.

Starbucks is not going to invest that kind of money in a new store until the Wilson Blvd streetcar gets built.

Wouldn’t it be great if Wegmans took over that Soviet Safeway?? I won’t get my hopes up though.

Agreed, but think it has not changed since the Eisenhower administration.

Wasn’t that the bakery that went through a prolonged series of vandalism just a few years ago?

  • Hopefully something like the Northside Social opens up in the neighborhood … coffee and wine bar… We walk down to the Buzz Bakery but it would be good to have something closer.

This place had good tamales but didn’t seem to do much business.

The little shopping center suffers from not much foot traffic and at the same time, limited parking. (La Union does well because really good Salva-Mex at a decent price is a big draw. No idea how well the pharmacy and barber/salon are doing.)

In that way, it’s simliar to Garden City on Lee Hwy–though I think the latter is made up of individually owned units, whereas this looks like it’s one building.

I would love for there to be a bakery with good croissants, or maybe even a Starbucks. But again, the sparse parking and dangerous sidewalks make it tough for customers.

The sidewalks are terrible although I chance it every few weeks for a haircut at that barbershop. I think the foot traffic would increase if there were more places worth visiting. I would love a neighborhood coffee bar like Java Shack to take up that spot.

Is Castro’s the one that briefly was called “Dumbo’s” and had a picture of the flying elephant? I wondered how long it would take for Disney lawyers to descend and rip them to shreds. I don’t know if that happened, but the name certainly didn’t last long.

There’s a new bakery down the road from where Castro’s closed. Great Harvest Bakery opened in the Dominion Hills Shopping Center on Wilson. Not sure exactly when it it opened, but its pretty recent.

    • Nearby Resident

Thanks! Good to know. I’ll give it a try.

Not so surprising really — Fidel has been in poor health, and Raul probably found he just couldn’t keep the bakery going by himself.

  • Civic Activist

Am not surprised at the closing. It was just not a convenient location for laundering drug money.

  • Neighbor

I think they lost their Latino customer base with the destruction of Buckingham.

I’d love to see a coffee shop on the order of Java Shack.

test common [due to random deletions]

  • Bluemonter

I would love a coffea shop and breakfast place to open at this location. The owners of Castros seemed to lose interest of this location once they opened up the other location on the corner of Wilson and 7.

Also, I don’t see any for lease sign?

Actually there arent any for lease signs on the following locations closed down recently:

    Smoothie King
    Daily Grind Coffea

I think we have burst the Ballston retail bubble…
