Postal Vehicle Involved in Ballston Wreck

by ARLnow.com August 2, 2012 at 11:45 am 4,990 33 Comments

A U.S. Postal Service van collided with a car at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and N. Glebe Road in Ballston just before 9:30 this morning.

Initial reports suggested the accident might have been a hit-and-run, with the postal vehicle fleeing the scene. In actuality, the accident apparently disabled the brakes on the minivan and it ended up rolling down a small hill before coming to rest on Washington Boulevard between Glebe Road and N. Buchanan Street, about 1 or 2 blocks away, according to scanner traffic.

The driver of the car was evaluated by paramedics for minor injuries. The postal employee was not reported to be injured.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor red light stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds!

  • E

dang, that postal girl looks good, nice legs, good face, she’s great to go.

    • YTK

      Iz Dude man, Dude

      • E

the white chick in the picture looks fantastic

        • YTK

hey who’s to question your taste?

        • ArlingtonNative

If it is same one (and pretty sure it is) she used to deliver in my neighborhood … smokin body with a nice smile and great attitude. Always made delivery time something to look forward to!

Glad she wasn’t hurt … sh##y way to start the day!

    • drax

She probably walks several miles each day, of course she’s got nice legs.

      • DarkHeart

        Great calves!

        • E

          so good

          • Tabby_TwoTone

That totally looks like a man from the back.

          • Tabby_TwoTone

OK, just looked at the other photos.

I’m 95% sure that person was born male.

NOT that there’s anything wrong with that of course. You’re into what you’re into.

          • drax

Oh, come on. That’s silly. One photo from a long distance, of a person who does physical work and therefore has a muscular body, can’t tell you crap.

          • Arl for Now

I passed the wreck this morning. She was female, and pretty, and pacing around waiting for the police. I felt badly for her.

          • drax

So we’ve confirmed that the female in the photo is female.

    • SomeGuy

Looks like the driver of the SUV was also thinking, “I’d hit that.”

  • YTK

Well, the mail must go thru– but not thru another car.

I wonder if the brakes failed becuz they were electric. My good ole 73 Chevy lost its front brakes once but the rear brakes worked just fine becuz of HYDRAULICS and Proportioning valves. With electric brakes– do you have a failsafe??

    • drax

Maybe the brakes died before the accident and helped cause it.

    • 350sbc

Hahaha! Electric brakes? Are you kidding me?

I don’t even think vehicles are equipped with electric brakes, and if they are, they certainly wouldn’t be on a Dodge Caravan.

  • AL

Brakes are still hydraulic these days.

I bet a recall is in order for those POS Chrysler minivans!

  • happycyclist

cars and trucks seem to be involved in lots of accidents. Perhaps we should ban them from our roads.

  • Andy

I hope the driver of the USPS vehicle is held to the letter of the law

    • mikayde

You postal haters for your information the other driver was charged with reckless driving GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU TELL LIES!!!!!!

  • Ashton Heights

Sigh, I’ll do it. Can we confirm she went postal?

    • drax

      1/2 FREDTERP awarded.

  • SomeGuy

She goes out there and puts her body in harm’s way just to make a buck. This poor woman is being exploited by her Postmaster General pimp. Where’s ACPD to start rounding up everyone with a mailbox who creates a market for this lady’s plight?

    • former John

Don’t be like me! Don’t pay for stamps.

  • Good Grief

This intersection is just terrible – def in need of a safety renovation. Hope everyone is okay.

The first picture at top shows how fugly Arlington is. Overgrown wild landscaping against a cement wall.

There was actually 2 separate accidents. The first was at the intersection of Glebe & Washington Blvd. This is the SUV being loaded onto the flat bed.
The second accident was on Washington Blvd when the postal van hit the back of the flat bed from the first accident.

  • Neighbor Cathy

Wow, people! Try to deal with the facts! The driver of the car, NOT the postal vehicle, was cited. The brake line broke on the postal vehicle as a result of the crash and the driver had to wrestle and fight for control of her truck. She’s a hero fro brining it to a stop safely.

I’ve known the mail carrier for 25 years and she is a dear friend. People still beg for her to return to our route. She is steadfastly helpful, accurate, kind and goes out of her way to get to know people on her route. She carries dog biscuits for every dog and consequently, even the dogs love her.

And you have to just wonder, don’t you, about the sexuality issues represented in the person who made such ignorant comments about the postal worker’s gender. Geez. She looks athletic, strong and competent. Does that make her a man?????

    • mikayde

Thank you for posting the correct version of the story, my husband and I have known her for 30 years and my husband works with her. She is a caring person and a credit to the postal service.

Lets see if the people who posted their sexist comments can go out and deliver the mail and work in all kind of weather conditions. No they can’t they are probably paper pushers!!!!!

  • DC

Thanks for posting the facts. We’ve known this carrier for two dozen years and she is, hands down, the best ever. Have you ever gotten a piece of someone else’s mail? Well, that NEVER happens on her route. She takes the kind of pride in her work that is truly rare in any profession these days.

We should be grateful to her for masterfully handling her brake emergency in the immediate aftermath of a head on accident with such grace and poise. Imagine how awful that was! No one else was hurt!

  • John

Hey Debbie, glad you’re okay,…….if people only knew all the crap you been thru in life, they’d only think of nice things to say…….Hey Folks, it’s very hard, but try n focus on the POSITIVE not the NEGATIVE!! your good friend John out in the countryside.
