Congressional Candidate Plans ‘Happy Hour Town Hall’

Independent congressional candidate Jason Howell is planning a “Happy Hour Town Hall” today (Tuesday).

Howell says he’ll be hosting interested 8th Congressional District residents at Bailey’s Pub and Grille in Crystal City (2100 Crystal Drive) starting at 5:00 p.m. The evening will start with a meet and greet. Then, at 6:00 p.m., Howell will give a “short presentation,” followed by a question and answer session with the audience.

Appetizers will be free for early arrivals, according to a press release.

Howell — who has raised just $9,572 as of June 30, compared to $813,463 for Democratic incumbent Rep. Jim Moran and $97,999 for Republican Patrick Murray — has been trying some unique strategies to help get the word out about his candidacy.

Howell has pledged to wear a name tag at all times between now and the Nov. 6 election. Earlier this year he ran a 5K race in Crystal City and issued a press release with the subject line “‘Running’ for Congress… Literally!” And last week Howell participated in Iota Club and Cafe’s open mic night; he performed “Congress-Man,” his take on Elton John’s “Rocket Man.”

Howell’s campaign website says he’ll have a booth at the Arlington County Fair later this week.

Murray, the other challenger to the 11-term Rep. Moran, will be attending a private fundraiser with Rep. Frank Wolf (R) tonight.

    congressMAAAAAAN. I’m a congressmannn.

    • Dr_Klahn

He’s got nothing on Jimmy Fallon’s “Tim Tebowie”.

By the time the question and answer session starts, people should be pretty well lubed on the $2 beers. This should be good. Too bad Bailey’s doesn’t sell popcorn.

Would love to see ways of campaigning for elected office that work and cost little. (In this regard, Kudos to ARLNOW.Com for providing space for candidates to make their case. These, and sometimes the comments, have been helpful to me. Any chance of forum with candidates for interaction?)

The cost for campaigning has gotten so high that candidates, to be viable, have to spend an ordinate amount of time soliciting contributions, and of course for large contributions or “bundlers” of usually large contributions, there is an implicit quid pro quo (at least ready access to the candidate, if elected; and it’s difficult to go against a major contributor with whom one is interacting).

Moran wins on name recognition alone. For every person who knows who he is and what his policies are, 1,000 people just recognize his name or vote for the party.

Every October candidates write essays on why you should vote for them. But if you see Jason on the street he’s incredibly nice and will answer any questions you throw his way. He’s the mayor of Ballston just about

5 pm? I guess only federal employees can make it.

  • nom de guerre

Does anyone know if pit bulls will be welcome?

    • Tabby_TwoTone

      Only humping ones.

    • jlm

what’s on the menu at Sam’s today nom?

      • nom de guerre

Slow roasted pulled Berkshire pork shoulder infused with Dr. Pepper and roasted garlic on a poppy seed Kaiser roll with a red and green cabbage broccoli slaw in a lime, sun dried tomato and cilantro vinaigrette.

        • jlm

          Nice. I’ll have that!

        • Dr_Klahn

Any chance I can just get a bologna sandwich with ketchup?

          • nom de guerre

Since we donated some of our coolers to your parade float we have had to limit some of our inventory. We do have some Lebanon bologna but no ketchup. Is it ok to substitute Moutarde de Meaux Pommery?

          • Dr_Klahn

Yeah, that would be good with a nice order of Soup Du Jour.

          • nom de guerre

Is Campbell’s tomato soup ok? We could grill the Lebanon bologna with American Cheese and omit the Moutarde de Meaux Pommery just for you.

          • cyclist

I want a salad in the shape of the Leaning Tower of Pisa with REAL grilled vegetables.

          • nom de guerre

I would prefer a boot shaped Osso Buco.

          • Tabby_TwoTone

Are you from Pa. with that Lebanon bologna reference?

          • nom de guerre

No, I’m from CA-Central Arlington, but have a friend who brings me delicious Kunzler sweet Lebanon bologna from Lancaster, PA.

  • Flip

Here’s the problem with the elect-me-i’m-just-a-funny-regular-guy-you-want-to-hang-out-with approach: If it works then when things aren’t going right the first thing people will say is instead of taking care of business he was off slow jamming the news. Call me nuts but I actually want my politicians to be authority figures that are hopefully smarter than me and act like it too – if I wanted some jagoff that likes spending his time going to happy hour and singing karaoke calling the shots, I’d vote for one of my friends.

    • kevin

obama’s been publicized for doing karaoke, and he has time every year to do the “everyman” ncaa march madness bracket.

I agree, I’d rather my polician not do that, but clearly there’s alot of people who disagree with us.

    • cyclist

In your case, both situations could happen.

      Think it through.

      (Just kidding.)

  • Mary-Austin

Where is Uncle Buck to make a mole comment when you need him?

  • DCBuff

Wow. From what I can tell, only one comment regarding the candidate who is the subject of this article. I’ve met the guy, and he seems pretty stand up–something I can’t really say regarding the incumbent. Instead, just a bunch of clown comments. Let’s get educated on who is running for office, what they stand for, what they claim they will do if in office, and discuss.

    • AlexRes

I agree with you DCBuff. I’ve met him as well and he seems like a pretty stand up guy – the type of person who would represent constituents well. He has a financial background and seemed quite astute on the budgetary and financial issues this country faces.

Oh, and anyone know when the last Town Hall meeting Moran hosted was held? Over a year ago.

  • ArlNewbie

I agree, DCBuff. I checked him out at Bailey’s last night and learned a lot. Normally vote Rep, but have become disenfranchised with the party. J. Howell is the fiscal conservative, social liberal sort of candidate I can get behind. Do some research and see what you think.
