Morning Poll: Where Did You Go to the Beach This Summer?

by ARLnow.com August 10, 2012 at 10:30 am 4,941 62 Comments

Kids are getting ready to go back to school and the Redskins just played a preseason football game. That can only mean one thing: summer is starting to wind down.

Labor Day may be only three weeks away, but don’t fret yet: the 10-day forecast is currently calling for six 90 degree days.

In the interest warm and sunny thoughts, let’s take a moment to reflect on where Arlington residents went (or are going) to the beach this summer. Which of the following popular beach destinations were on your travel agenda this summer?

  • Autoexec.bat

    Captiva, FL

  • SamW

Ocean Isle Beach, NC. Far superior. But don’t tell anyone.

    • Good point, by popular demand we’ve added the Outer Banks.

      • WD

Ocean Isle is nowhere near the Outer Banks.

  • tf

    why no outer banks option?

  • JamesE

Outer Banks, just a short 270 miles away

    • Swag

$1M beachfront house in Avalon, NJ…for about 10 hours, and only because I had to.

Vacations are lame. Staycations are where its at.

      • Tabby_TwoTone

Only $1 million, Avalon beachfront? Must have been tiny!

  • Given our proximity to NC and prevalence of OBX bumper stickers, I’m amazing Outer Banks is not on there.

    • JamesE

Agreed, outer banks needs to be on the list. I usually end up at Awful Arthur’s and eat by body weight in steamed shrimp and crab legs.

    • Wow&Flutter

      OBX = obnoxious

    • Not Me

The ” I’m amazing ” plug was rather indulgent. 😉

  • Good Grief

Ventnor, NJ! Love the real Jersey Shore, not the crap you see on TV.

  • yes again

As a relatively new Arlington resident, what is the best beach for a day trip?

    • B

      The P Street Beach

      • Columbia Island Denizen

why go so far when you can go to the shores of the Potomac?

        • B

True, I guess LBJ Park counts.

          • Columbia Island Denizen

            “Pentagon Shores”

      • Clueless Straight Guy

I went to the P Street Beach last Saturday around 10 am and it was completely empty. Hardly anyone showed up all day. When the sun went down I left, and then I saw some guys in really tight bikini bottoms showing up. I don’t get it – how do you get a tan at night? I brought my lotion like they told me and everything.

        • FrenchyB

Did you put the lotion in the basket?

If you’re willing to try a 3 hour or so drive each way for a day trip:

Ocean City, MD for vibrant family fun with lots o’ beachy things to do
Dewey Beach, DE for bro’s & brews
Rehoboth Beach, DE for chill[er] family fun … or FABulous cocktail parties
Cape Henlopen State Park, DE for huge beaches with few beach town amenities … except if you schlep in to Lewes

      • B

“FABulous cocktain parties” and “lots o’ beachy things.” Are you sure you haven’t been to P Street Beach?

        • WeiQiang

wow, you are slow on the uptake. new to ArlNow? in any case, no … I’m neither a str8 man on the DL or an addict, so I haven’t been there.

    • Lou

If you literally mean there and back in the same day, check out Calvert Cliffs for something a little different. You’re not going to get to an ocean in less than 2.5 hours, so that’s only do-able as a day trip if you like 5 hours in a car minimum (and the choices are pretty obvious – pick pretty much any beach between Lewes, DE and the MD side of Assateague.)

      • drax

Other options for sub-oceanic day trip beaches:

        Colonial Beach, Va.
Sandy Point State Park at Annapolis, MD

      • SomeGuy

This interests me, Lou. Never even heard of Calvert Cliffs. And I’d be curious what similar day trip destinations people suggest for getting near some open water (other than the Potomac).

        • WeiQiang

There are lots of great communities with waterfront access or small beaches from Annapolis on south to Point Lookout and then back up the Potomac to just north of the Harry Nice/301 bridge. Cobb Island. St. Clements Island. Colonial Beach, VA and Port Tobacco are popular with boaters.

I like the Northern Neck of VA to explore. Tappahanock, VA is a decent place to stop on the “Tidewater Trail”.

… and of course the whole Eastern Shore of the Delmarva.

    Bora Bora

  • observer

Fripp at the end of August and Labor Day weekend.

  • Myrtle Beach

  • KARLington

    This is an elitist survey that discriminates against us poor slobs who can’t manage to take summer vacations. { sarcasm, ICYMI }

  • veeta

Why is Hilton Head on there but not any other SC or GA beach? I do find it easier to fly to a beach down south rather than try to drive to one closer to home. traffic sucks.

    • Sheriff Gonna Getcha

because Hilton Head is awesome. The distance keeps the rif-raff away.

  • Theakston

London…beach volleyball at Horseguards. OK I didn’t get much of a tan. 🙁

    • Josh S

Or a medal. The Romney’s don’t like losers – I’d slip out the back of the barn while you still have a chance….

  • SomeGuy

I’m not surprised to see Rehoboth and Dewey well-represented among this site’s readership.

  • Brad

The beaches of the Côte d’Argent.

  • NIMBY The Chicken

Myrtle Beach SC, and Atlantic City NJ. Although I didn’t dare step in that vile sand in Atlantic City.

  • arlcyclist

    Folly Beach, SC!

  • DB

The good ol’ Sea Colony–where the photo was taken from.

    • FrenchyB

I miss the run-down pitch & putt course that used to be next to Sea Colony…

  • how come bora bora, tahiti isnt on the list

  • DavisE

    Chincoteague Island

  • bum

    • Atlantis

      Did we meet?

      • bum

Possibly. I was the one who mistakenly bought a towel with the logo for a Serbian football club that pissed off a whole bunch of people.

  • Erik P.

I didn’t. Not worth sitting in 5 hours of traffic each way.

  • Z

PNC Park on the north shore of the Allegheny

    • Tina

      Pittsburgh Love!

  • General Zod

I’m down on Ocracoke Island, NC right now and have seen 3-4 Arlington County car stickers! Can’t get away from you peeps!

    • nyuk nyuk

That’s what people that live in North Carolina have been complaining about for years.

      • General Zod

Most North Carolinians don’t visit the OBX. I have family in Raleigh and they wouldn’t even consider vacationing here. Even in the southernmost outpost here in Ocracoke. Say there’s too many Yankees there. Then again Wilmington area beaches are 2 hours from their front door. OBX beaches are 3.5-4 hours away.

        • nyuk nyuk

      • Mary-Austin

I think it’s worse with the Hampton Roads people. They are only a 90 minute drive so half of the 757 is down there this time of year.

        • drax

90 minutes to Hampton Roads? Not likely.

          • Mary-Austin

From Chesapeake to Kitty Hawk is 90 minutes at most. Made the trip dozens of times.

          • drax

Oh, I thought you meant from DC to Hampton Roads.

  • DeportEmAll

I was in Ocracoke last weekend (flew down for the weekend). My cousin who just built a house there calls it “a drinking island with a fishing problem.”

  • ef yourself

  • Josh S

    Does the Russian River count?

  • YTK

The Beach? The BEACH? I think i stepped on some sand when I walked past a construction site in Arlingtonia a few days ago but that was it.
