Low Water Pressure Issues Continue — Residents in parts of Lyon Park, Buckingham, Douglas Park, Nauck, Arlington Ridge and Crystal City may experience low water pressure this morning due to various water issues. According to Arlington’s Department of Environmental Services, yesterday’s break in a 30-inch water main at Arlington Blvd and S. Irving Street is isolated and awaiting parts for additional repair work. Several water leaks also have been reported this morning at S. Stafford Street and 16th Road S., 26th Street S. and 26th Place S., and 31st Street S. and S. Woodrow Street.

Protein Bar Opens in Two Weeks — According to its Twitter feed, the new Protein Bar restaurant is set to open at 800 N. Glebe Road in Ballston on Wednesday, January 30. The restaurant will start serving its healthy food at 11:00 a.m.

MLK Tribute Speaker Changed — The keynote speaker for Arlington’s 44th Annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has been changed. Lehigh University Professor and Hip Hop Scholars, LLC founder Dr. James Braxton Peterson will now speak at the event, which takes place this Sunday, January 20, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Washington-Lee High School (1301 N. Stafford Street). The former speaker, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, can no longer attend due to a scheduling conflict, according to the county.

  • South Side Chris

Water pressure has been low in Fairlington Villages too for a last couple days.

  • Piker Shorts

Everyone loves to forget that MLK was a communist

    • Hee-Haw

      what’s your point ?

      • CourthouseChris

There is no point to be had here. In their mind any progressive social or economic stance is “communism”, which makes the word itself meaningless in the context and clearly marks their argument as reactionary and poorly thought through.

        • drax

And even if he was a communist (which he wasn’t), so what? He was still a hero who did more for America than any of the pathetic whiners who call him one.

    • Dyker Longs

MLK was a communist the same way Obama is a socialist. You know, because both are black.

      • MC 703

Ha! It’s sad but there is an element of truth to that.

      • Peter

        O is only half black.

        • Dick
          • Manti Te’o

So I see. The one drop rule only applies to those with any African ancestry. And that’s why Tiger Woods isn’t the greatest Asian golfer ever. Cuz we don’t like Asians.

        • ACDC Hack

          “O is only half black”

That is why he is only a socialist and not a Communist !!

Geeze, do I have to explain everything !!!

  • gospelsinger

so glad for Protein Bar – the menu looks excellent! very healthy choices

  • Alex

Low water pressure is annoying, but why does Arlington supply very high water pressure to some residences? I’m getting 85 PSI regularly. Just a hair below where one would start having water hammer issues and plumbing damage. Average PSI should be 55 – 65 I think?

    • John Fontain

If the pressure bothers you, press the stop button.

  • In Buckingham, the water pressure was a little better than yesterday but is still lower than normal.

    • Buckingham Bandit

      You’re telling me…

  • drax

Did anyone notice that The Weather Channel is naming winter storms like hurricanes now? This one is “Iago.”

    • gospelsinger

Yes – it is pronounced ee-ah-go. At least it can help us remember and refer to the “storm” better. Otherwise I think I forget the storms that come and go.

      • jackson

This storm is going to make false claims to Othello about his friend sleeping with his wife.

      • DarkHeart

I have my fingers crossed for Jeroboam to be next.

      • Josh S

I’m guessing you are a Weather Channel plant.
        Or you’re being sarcastic.
We got along perfectly fine for centuries without naming winter storms – there is no reason to start now – it’s nothing more than a marketing ploy.
Unfortunately, big media being an echo chamber and full of spineless “me too” thinkers, I suspect it won’t be long before everyone follows suit.

        • JMB

As a Dominion Power customer, I’d like to start naming power outages.

          • ACDC Hack

“I’d like to start naming power outages.”

Yes, but this is a “family” blog……

        • jackson

“Snowpocalypse,” anyone? At any rate, at least it’s not something deserving of a full-on ragefest, and for that I’m grateful not to take a side at all.

          • WeiQiang

            Snow-torious B.I.G.

        • drax

I’m sure the Weather Channel has plants all over the Internet.

  • South Awwlington

Random question: read several times on this list about the reporting prowess of Arlington Mercury yet it seems that their website is updated at MOST weekly. What gives? News? Not so much,

    • Herndon Hag

Anything is better than the Capital Weather Gang.

      • Hee-Haw

Why would you say that ? They are more often right and pretty much nailed this storm as being overhyped, yesterday.

        • Herndon Hag

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. If you read the CWGs forecast in the print edition in the morning, it is right about 20% of the time…awful odds if you ask me.

          • Hee-Haw

When it comes to precipitation, they are pretty good, better than any other local news source. What are you referring to ? Temperatures ? “Oh no, its 36 degrees outside, the CWG said it would be 37 ! They are so wrong !! “

          • BBMS

They are DC centric. The NWS has to issue a regional type outlook and so they had to say it might snow as much as 5 inches because the particular region they are addressing might see that much. Then CWG freaks out and says there’s no way it will snow 5 inches on U Street, then later they quietly tweet that the upper level of snow could be 3-6 inches.

          • Hee-Haw
          • drax

I only see them consistently saying this storm will produce very little. No mention of 3-6 inches.

          • BBMS

They tweeted 3-6 as an upper limit yesterday evening. They also increased their snow index or whatever overnight. So they underestimated, NWS overestimated, and this morning’s updates met in the middle with the corrections. Happy, pappy?

          • Glebe Roader

This is what I took away from the Capital Weather Gang’s post from 3:33pm yesterday:

“Little to no snow accumulation is more likely than over 1 inch of snow for most of the Washington, D.C. metro area.”

As they do, they discussed the different models predicting more or less snow. They said there is less than a 10% chance of getting that 5+ inches the NWS “warned” us about.

          • drax

            “upper limit”

          • Reston Rag

Capital Weather Gang is awesome, and very hipster dudes too.

The government is terrible at their weather forecasting. They should not even be doing it if they are so bad. I say shut them down and save some money. If you can not get your forecast right, it is a waste of taxpayer money.

          • drax

            Reston Rag,

            Have you met Dick Chrysler?

He’s the idiot congressman who suggested we get rid of the NWS because we have the Weather Channel–not knowing that the Weather Channel gets all its data from the NWS.

If you think weather prediction is not necessary, fine. Don’t think anyone else is going to have the satellites and radar and computers to do it any better than NWS.

        • Greg

I agree. Their page on the Post site is by far the best local source for weather.

          • Glebe Roader

Also agree. They discuss, in detail, WHY they are making a particular forecast.

  • Dr. Dolitte

There’s a link from James Braxton Peterson’s bio that indicates he’s a Dr. just like the other guy, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson. So why isn’t he being billed as Dr.?

    • It was accidentally omitted. Added now.

  • Water pressure was also very low in Barcroft.

  • WeiQiang

Water pressure was fine in SARWOK+ at the bottom of the Ridge this morning … guess the folks up on the Ridge itself are having problems, what with physics and all.

  • dras

    Is SARWOK+ near CoPi?
