Crime Report: Racist Graffiti in Ballston

A homeless man was arrested last Friday after allegedly writing “racist” graffiti around Ballston, according to Arlington County Police.

From this week’s Arlington crime report:

DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY (series), 140815014, 4200 block of N. Fairfax Drive. Between 4:30 and 6:55 am on August 15, an intoxicated subject wrote profane language with a green marker on buildings, vehicles, bus shelters and signs. Phillip Cannon, 55, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with five counts of destruction of property and drunk in public.

FELONY HIT & RUN / INDECENT EXPOSURE, 140815062, 1600 block of S. Barton Street. At 9:23 pm on August 15, an intoxicated and nude subject struck two vehicles while driving a motorcycle. The subject fled on foot into a wooded area after wrecking the motorcycle. Police located the man a short distance away and he was transported to INOVA Fairfax hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Roland Hitchens, 42, of Arlington, VA, was arrested and charged with felony hit & run, indecent exposure, DUI, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving while revoked. He was held in the Arlington County Detention Facility without bond.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY, 140815021, 1900 block of N. Moore Street. Between 7 pm on August 14 and 8 am on August 15, an unknown subject(s) entered an office suite and stole two laptops. There is no suspect(s) description.

BURGLARY, 140816012, 2400 block of S. Columbia Pike. Between 12:45 and 2 am on August 16, an unknown subject(s) entered the office of a restaurant and stole cash. There is no suspect(s) description.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY, 140816030, 1100 block of S. Hayes Street. Between 9:45 pm on August 15 and 9 am on August 16, an unknown subject(s) stole sports jerseys off of mannequins. There is no suspect(s) description.

BURGLARY, 140819031, 500 block of S. 12th Street. Between 12 pm on August 11 and 9 am on August 19, an unknown subject(s) stole copper from a construction site. There is no suspect(s) description.

The STEAM Workforce Development Teacher Fellowship provides Arlington Public Schools (APS) high school, middle school, and elementary school teachers with opportunities to learn about workplace needs in STEAM-related fields and for them to use the experience to enhance student learning to match workplace expectations in a selected industry. STEAM Fellows participate in a three-week summer fellowship, receiving a $4,000 stipend upon completion.

Applicants planning to pursue a fellowship in the arts must demonstrate how they will build connections between the arts and science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
