ARLnow announces two news hires, new editorial beat and revamped internship program

ARLnow is establishing its first news beat with the addition of two new editorial staffers.

ARLnow and its sister sites, ALXnow and FFXnow, will all be served by the new breaking news, public safety and local business beat. The beat will allow our newsroom to build more subject matter expertise while better serving readers and making our editorial operation more resilient.

To staff the new beat, ARLnow has hired Jared Serre as Assistant Editor and Katie Taranto as Reporter.

Serre was formerly the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper at West Virginia University and most recently worked for legal news service Law360. He will start next week.

Taranto is graduating from the University of Missouri and has served as Assistant City Editor for the Columbia Missourian. She will start in late June.

In addition to the new beat, ARLnow is announcing a revamp of our news internship program. Beginning in early 2025, we will relaunch the internship program with a focus specifically on local business and feature reporting, as well as providing real-world, practical workplace experience to aspiring local journalists from a variety of backgrounds.
