UPDATED: Mall evacuated due to suspicious vehicle in parking garage

The Pentagon City mall was evacuated Saturday evening due to a suspicious vehicle in an adjacent parking garage.

Arlington County police and the bomb squad investigated over the course of several hours. Photos and video from the scene showed a large emergency response and authorities operating an unmanned vehicle to inspect the car.

Authorities gave the all clear around 11 p.m.

“Police and fire personnel will be clearing the scene,” ACPD said on social media.

On Monday, police provided an update (below) noting that “the owner of the vehicle was located” and banned from the mall property.

SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE (Significant), 2024-06010229, 800 block of Army Navy Drive. At approximately 7:30 p.m. on June 1, police were dispatched to the report of a parked, unoccupied suspicious vehicle inside a parking garage. As a precaution during the preliminary investigation, mall security personnel evacuated the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City. Members of the Arlington County Fire Department’s Bomb Squad responded to the scene, cleared the vehicle and determined there was no credible threat. The evacuation was subsequently lifted. During the course of the investigation, the owner of the vehicle was located and issued a banning notice for the property.

Responding to an inquiry from ARLnow, police spokeswoman Ashley Savage said the vehicle was suspicious because it had “no license plates and all seats removed except the driver’s seat.”
