Overnight I-395 chase ends with big crash, search for suspect near Shirlington

A drone, a helicopter and at least three police agencies helped to apprehend a driver who crashed during a chase early Monday morning.

The crash happened just after 1 a.m. as Virginia State Police chased a black Chevy Camaro from I-395 to Arlington Mill Drive, near Shirlington. State troopers originally tried to stop the Camaro for reckless driving on southbound I-395, according to a VSP spokesperson.

Traffic camera video shows the Camaro approaching the intersection of Arlington Mill and S. Walter Reed Drive at a high rate of speed, just moments before it crashed and overturned, coming to rest on or near the Four Mile Run Trail before the driver fled on foot.

“Crash, crash, it’s a rollover, it’s bad,” an officer radioed to dispatch. “Bailout — westbound into the woods.”

The car was reported stolen and a gun was found inside, according to scanner traffic. Officers requested the Fairfax County police helicopter and advised that they were launching a drone to help with the search.

“The suspect was apprehended with the help of Arlington and Alexandria Police a short time later,” the state police spokesperson told ARLnow. “Charges are pending.”

VSP was unable to provide additional information about expected charges or the suspect’s name. There’s also no initial word on injuries.
