Red light enforcement cameras are scheduled to begin operating at four Arlington intersections starting Sept. 1.
Installation of the cameras has already begun, the county said in a press release, and they will operate at the following intersections:
- Columbia Pike and Washington Blvd
- Langston Blvd and Spout Run Parkway
- 10th Street N. and N. Barton Street (between Courthouse and Lyon Park)
- Langston Blvd and N. Lynn Street (in Rosslyn)
Following a monthlong “warning period” starting Aug. 1, red light violators will be issued a $50 fine per infraction.
By the end of the year, the county also plans to place cameras at the intersection of Wilson Blvd and N. Lynn Street in Rosslyn as well as on Langston Blvd at the I-66 Exit 72 off-ramp.
The cameras will be activated when a vehicle enters an intersection after a light turns red, the county said. They will take digital images and video footage to document the event, and personnel at a contracted company will review the documents before sending them to the Arlington County Police Department, which will remain responsible for issuing tickets.
The intersections were selected based on crash rate, red light violation rate, pedestrian safety issues and the difficulty of conducting enforcement through traditional methods.
The cameras are part of the Vision Zero Initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic injuries and fatalities in Arlington by 2030.
“The plan identifies automated speed enforcement, including the use of red-light cameras, as a tool to lower speeds and enhance equity in enforcement,” the county said.
Arlington introduced the PhotoRED red light program in 2010 and expanded it in 2015. Cameras currently enforce violations at seven Arlington intersections.
