A stretch of the northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway will be closed over the next two weekends.
The closures, affecting the stretch between Spout Run Parkway and Route 123, will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 26, and end at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 29, before the morning rush hour, per a National Park Service press release.
The same schedule will be in place the following weekend, from Friday, Aug. 2, through Monday, Aug. 5. Only one southbound lane will remain open.
During the closure, drivers are advised to take Spout Run Parkway and follow a marked detour route including Langston Blvd, Glebe Road, and Chain Bridge Road — likely significantly increasing traffic on some Arlington roads.
In the event of rain or other bad weather, the work and closures will be rescheduled.
The latest update comes after several months of multi-lane closures impacting Arlington commuters starting in late May.
The improvements are part of a major rehabilitation project to enhance drivability and safety along the northern section of the GW Parkway from Spout Run to I-495, which serves about 26 million drivers annually. The park service said that this section has not undergone significant maintenance since its completion in 1962.
Construction started in April 2023 and is expected to wrap up in late 2025.
