Yorktown High School grad Torri Huske is an Olympic champion in Paris.
The Arlingtonian edged fellow American Gretchen Walsh by 0.04 seconds to finish at 55.59 seconds and win gold in her signature 100-meter butterfly event. Three years ago, in Tokyo, Huske narrowly missed the podium in the same event by 0.01 seconds.
Huske, 21, was interviewed live on the national NBC broadcast shortly after her first-place finish.
“I feel like I’m in shock right now, I don’t even know how to process it,” Huske said. “I feel like I’m about to cry but I’m also smiling.”
“It’s surreal,” she continued. “It’s been a long road but I’ve had a lot of support I’m grateful for all of it.”
This is the third Olympic medal for Huske, after taking silver in Tokyo and, yesterday, in Paris in the 4x100m relay team event.
