Power outage reported in Ballston and Virginia Square

Update at 8:55 p.m. — Dominion is still reporting 663 customers without power in the area, with an updated restoration time range between 11 p.m.-4 a.m. According to an email shared with ARLnow by a local resident, the outage involves burned underground power lines that need to be replaced and tested.

Earlier: Hundreds are without power this morning in the Ballston and Virginia Square area.

A larger outage was first reported last night around midnight in the Bluemont and Ballston neighborhoods. As of 10:30 a.m., 676 Dominion customers were still without power, mostly in northern parts of Ballston, according to the power company.

Among those without power is Arlington Central Library, which is closed and tentatively hoping to open around noon today. The outage also caused the traffic signals at the busy intersection of N. Glebe Road and Washington Blvd to go dark this morning, though the traffic lights are now back on.

Dominion’s website says the outage was caused by an “equipment problem” and currently estimates full restoration happening between 3-6 p.m.

Ballston and Virginia Square also saw a series of power outages earlier this summer.
