Two hospitalized after ‘mob’ assault outside of high school

Two people were hurt and a car was damaged as a result of an after-school fight in the Ballston area yesterday.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Washington Blvd and N. Stafford Street, near the Washington-Liberty High School football field. It was categorized by police as an “assault by mob.”

“The preliminary investigation indicates the male victim was standing on the sidewalk when the five male suspects approached and engaged him in conversation before stealing his ski mask and walking away,” Arlington County police spokeswoman Ashley Savage tells ARLnow.

“The victim, along with a second victim, confronted the suspects and a physical altercation ensued,” Savage continued. “The suspects, described as males in their teens, then fled the scene. The victims were transported to an area hospital with injuries considered non-life threatening. Property damage to a vehicle was reported as a result of the altercation.”

Initial reports suggest one of the victims had a serious knee injury.

The fracas prompted the following email to families from W-L principal Tony Hall, noting that the fight involved students of the school.

Good evening W-L Families,

A fight occurred after school involving several students near the intersection of N. Stafford St. and Washington Blvd and was witnessed by several students and parents. Both the Arlington County Police and Fire Departments were called to assist. The fight resulted in an injury as well as property damage to a parked car. The students involved will be disciplined according to the APS Student Code of Conduct and have been referred to law enforcement.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Savage said.
