A Walgreens near Lyon Village is closing today (Wednesday) to make way for redevelopment plans.
The convenience store at 3130 Langston Blvd is on track to be replaced with a 12-story tower with retail on the ground floor and apartments above.
Prescription files at the Walgreens will be transferred to the CVS Pharmacy across the street, at 3133 Langston Blvd, a sign posted outside the drug store says.
“It is never an easy decision to close a store,” Walgreens spokesperson Jennifer Cotto told ARLnow. “We know that our stores are important to the communities that we serve, and therefore do everything possible to improve the store performance. When closures are necessary, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions.”
All employees have been retained and were offered positions at other locations, Cotto said.
Many items at the Walgreens were on clearance and several shelves were emptying out when ARLnow visited earlier this week.
Developer Rooney Properties has filed site plan and rezoning applications for the address, and has hosted meetings with the nearby Maywood Community Association and Lyon Village Civic Association in recent weeks, according to its website.
Renderings uploaded this summer depict an L-shaped building with 276 housing units, mostly one- and two-bedroom apartments. Plans call for more than 300 parking spaces, along with about 13,000 square feet of ground floor retail space.
The project is expected to be complete by 2028 and cost about $130 million, the Washington Business Journal reported.
