The fieldhouse at Meridian High School Stadium will receive a $600,000 refresh and upgrade under a proposal unanimously approved by Falls Church City School Board members on Nov. 12.
The appropriation was part of a series of one-time-funding requests approved by School Board members, totaling just under $1.5 million in school funds and $400,000 in city-government funds.
“We’ve all provided feedback and rankings and priority and worked with the staff,” Board Chair Tate Gould said prior to unanimous adoption of the full package.
The fieldhouse includes bathrooms, a concession stand, press box, roof viewing and storage. City school officials have received “significant community feedback” in support of the upgrade.
The package of improvements ratified on Nov. 12 included a number of other items related to school athletics, health or physical education:
- $103,500 will be spent on modernizing the lighting in the gym at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School.
- $70,000 will be the school system’s share of the cost of replacing the scoreboard at the high-school stadium. The other half of the cost will be raised by the school’s booster club.
- $20,000 will be spent to improve the grass playground at Mount Daniel Elementary, which currently is “rocky and compacted,” school officials say.
