A local outpost for homebrewing supplies is going out of business after nearly two decades in the Falls Church area.
MyLocal HomeBrew Shop, located at 6201 Leesburg Pike, specializes in supplies for at-home beer, wine and kombucha making. As of this week, the shop has sold off most of its remaining inventory, from hops to kegs, as it prepares to close for good, owner Derek Terrell told ARLnow.
“I really appreciated everybody who came through my doors, and it was fun watching their families grow up and be a part of the community,” Terrell said. “I appreciate it, and I wish them the best of luck as well.”
Terrell said the homebrewing market took a hit post-pandemic, and he was not able to further negotiate his shop’s lease.
“[The market] just never rebounded,” he said. “Unfortunately, I was one of those victims, so I tried for as long as I could, but it just got to the point where it was untenable, and that was the last straw.”
Terrell first got into homebrewing during his college years at Virginia Tech.
“I was kinda crunchy granola, and I liked to cook and bake a lot of organic goods,” Terrell said. “When I realized as a 20-year-old that I could make chemical-free beer … that’s what sealed the deal.”
Following the closure of the homebrew shop, Terrell said he will continue working alongside Settle Down Easy Brewing Co. in Falls Church.
“It’s been great to have people come by shake my hand and say thank you and goodbye,” Terrell said. “I’ll just see where life takes me.”
The store’s 20th anniversary would have been Feb. 16. Terrell encourages people to raise a beer to the anniversary on that day.
