Yorktown girls basketball team finishes 1-1 in holiday tournament

The Yorktown Patriots recently split two basketball games at the Ron Engle Classic holiday tournament in Middletown, Md.

The Patriots (3-8) routed the Blake Bengals, 64-18, in their first game of the high-school competition. Senior Helene Lydon led Yorktown with 15 points in the win.

Junior Eleanor Mahshie had 11 points and five assists, sophomore Ainsley Lomas had 10 points and five rebounds, and junior Sam Donahue had six points and six rebounds.

Additional scorers for Yorktown were sophomore Elena Debevec (seven points), senior Julia Boller (five points), sophomore Zainab Qaiyumi (three points), senior Victoria Carcillo (three points), sophomore Olivia Shiplett (two points) and freshman Molly Cooper (two points).

Yorktown fell to the host Middletown Knights, 72-68, in its second game. Mahshie led Yorktown with 15 points and seven assists. Lydon scored 14 and grabbed five rebounds, Debevec tallied 14 points and three steals, and Shiplett scored nine points and blocked two shots. Qaiyumi and Cooper each scored five points, and Lomas added four points.

Yorktown is scheduled to resume games this week in Liberty District contests, weather permitting.
