With a recent seesaw one-goal road victory, the Yorktown Patriots ice-hockey club team improved to 5-1 overall with its first win of 2025.
Yorktown edged host Broad Run, 6-5, at the Ashburn Ice House in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League match.
Both teams shook off some rust from the holiday break early in the first period. Yorktown struck first with back-to-back goals on two strong shots from defenseman John Chistolini to take a 2-0 lead into the second period. Broad Run answered to tie the match at 2.
In the last minute of the second period, Yorktown retook the lead when Bennett Haas hit Roger Allenbaugh with a pass in front of the net. Allenbaugh beat the goalie for a 3-2 Patriot lead heading into the final period.
In the third period, Broad Run tied the score at 3, but Yorktown took a 5-3 lead on goals by Henry Dwyer and by Chistolini. The latter came off a steal by Alex Olsen and completed a hat trick for Chistolini.
Broad Run battled back to tie the match at 5 with two minutes to play. Yorktown got some late-match heroics from Dwyer when he tapped in a loose rebound in front of the net to put the Patriots up 6-5 for the game-winner.
Assists on the Yorktown goals went to Haas, Allenbaugh, Olsen and Peyton Tien. Goalie Brendan Thompson stopped 36 shots.
The rest of the lineup for Yorktown included Logan McGraw, Jamie Hardie, Benson Kluger, Matthew Hamrick, Andrew Levine, Matthew Herzfeld, Stewart Bream, Andrew Olsen, Will O’Sullivan, Will Schryver, Lucas Onnofrey and Gunnar Obitts.
Yorktown returns to action on Friday (Jan. 10) at 8 p.m. at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex against the Madison Warhawks.
