With productive scoring and some strong shutdown defense, the Yorktown High School varsity ice-hockey club team is enjoying a 5-1 start this season.

The winning record is no surprise — Yorktown has become one of the top teams in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League in recent seasons and has an experienced lineup this fall, including eight seniors.

With yet another shutout, the Washington-Liberty Generals capped their ice-hockey season with a second big accomplishment.

The high-school team’s fifth straight shutout triumph was a 3-0 win over the Yorktown Patriots at a packed MedStar Capitals Iceplex in the season-ending match between the Arlington rivals.

Yorktown edged host Broad Run, 6-5, at the Ashburn Ice House in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League match.

By dominating the time of possession, the Yorktown High School ice-hockey club team defeated host Fauquier/Patriot, 4-1, at Haymarket Iceplex to cap the first half of its regular season.

Yorktown took 65 shots on goal in the win and allowed only nine.

With the victory, Yorktown improved to 3-1 and remained tied atop the Smythe Division of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League.

Through six matches, the Washington-Liberty Generals club ice-hockey team has had ups and downs — mostly ups.

To date, the high-school squad has compiled a 4-1-1 record. Two of the wins are shutouts by 5-0 and 4-0 scores. The Generals also have a 7-2 blowout victory, have tied a match at 4, have a close 4-2 win and lost by a tight 5-4 margin.
