Winter weather drives dozens of water main breaks in Arlington

Fluctuating temperatures in recent weeks have led to a spate of water main breaks in Arlington.

Between Jan. 1 and Jan. 15 alone, the county saw 33 breaks, county spokesperson Katie O’Brien told ARLnow. The county’s water main break map shows issues scattered across numerous neighborhoods, some affecting well over 100 people.

“We do anticipate several more breaks, especially into early next week due to the forecast freezing temperatures,” O’Brien said. “Quick drops create stress on water and sewer infrastructure, increasing the chance of leaks and breaks.”

Similar issues happen during sudden spikes in temperature in the summer, she noted.

The county proactively replaces about two to three of its 500 miles of water mains every year — replacing old pipes with ductile iron pipes, which are better at withstanding quick temperature changes.

“Water main cleaning and the relining program extend the life of pipes with minimal construction/disruption,” O’Brien said. “We have a valve exercise program to ensure proper isolation to minimize the number of customers impacted and make break repairs go faster.”

While the county monitors water pressure to spot breaks, residents are encouraged to call the 24/7 Water and Sewer Control Center at 703-228-6555 if they notice any issues.

Arlington’s Department of Environmental Services regularly posts about water main breaks, including the number of customers affected, on social media.
