An Extreme Cold Watch has been issued for Arlington County and the D.C. area, with “dangerously cold wind chills” as low as -10 expected Saturday, amid windy conditions that could also cause power outages.

Reduced hours at the Shirlington Transit Center, driven by vandalism concerns and budget constraints, prompted criticisms during last week’s bitter cold.
The transit center at 2975 S. Quincy Street cut its hours to 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on weekdays and eliminated Saturday hours entirely on Nov. 14. It was a significant reduction from the center’s previous hours of 5:30 a.m. to midnight.
Arlington and the D.C. area will experience dangerously cold conditions Friday night into Saturday morning, with wind chills dropping as low as 8 degrees below zero.
The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for the area from 8 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday. The extreme wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken, according to the weather service.

Overnight low temperatures in the single digits or low-to-mid teens are expected all week. A Cold Weather Advisory — in effect starting tonight (Monday) and extending through Thursday morning — notes that wind chills could reach -10 degrees.
Fluctuating temperatures in recent weeks have led to a spate of water main breaks in Arlington.
Between Jan. 1 and Jan. 15 alone, the county saw 33 breaks, county spokesperson Katie O’Brien told ARLnow. The county’s water main break map shows issues scattered across numerous neighborhoods, some affecting well over 100 people.

The wind is expected to whip up starting Friday morning, then temperatures will plummet throughout the day. The combination will lead to dangerous conditions for anyone outside.

Arlington’s public schools will open on a two hour delay on Tuesday.
“Due to the extreme cold, all APS Schools and offices will open two hours late,” APS said in a statement Monday evening. “The delay will provide additional time to warm buildings and address any potential cold weather mechanical issues with buses that have been idle since Friday.”
