Video: Car driven into creek near Shirlington

A car was driven into the Four Mile Run creek near Shirlington this afternoon.

The crash happened shortly after 2:30 p.m., near the intersection of S. Walter Reed Drive and Arlington Mill Drive.

Traffic camera footage, below, shows the driver slowly turning onto Arlington Mill but driving over a curb, crossing several lanes and accelerating before making a left turn across a trail and into the icy creek.

It’s unclear if the driver of the car — which appeared to be a Fiat — was suffering some sort of medical emergency. No other vehicles were involved.

Initial reports suggest that two vehicle occupants were able to get out before first responders arrived and were not seriously hurt.

The traffic camera video also shows a crowd gathering near the crash site, picking up debris from the road and apparently helping the victims.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene. As of publication time one lane of Arlington Mill Drive remained blocked.
