UPDATED: Thousands without power on frigid morning

Nearly 5,000 homes and businesses in parts of Arlington are without power this morning.

The outages are primarily affecting neighborhoods along and north of the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, according to a Dominion outage map. As of just before 9 a.m. Tuesday, the utility company said 4,866 customers were affected in Arlington.

The widespread outage comes on the coldest morning of the year so far, with the temperature around 10 degrees. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect.

The outage has also prompted Arlington Public Schools to close Innovation Elementary, H-B Woodlawn and the Shriver Program in the Rosslyn and Courthouse area, according to an alert shared with ARLnow by a reader.

Dominion’s website lists the cause as “pending investigation” and the estimated restoration time as between 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

(As of 2 p.m., the number of local homes and businesses without power was down to 372.)
