JUST IN: Thousands without power in Arlington amid strong winds

More than 3,000 homes and businesses were without power Sunday evening amid continued strong winds.

As of 5:30 p.m., Dominion reported 3,087 customers without power in Arlington County. That number had been growing as gusty winds fell trees and branches around the area.

A 56 mph gust was earlier reported at Reagan National Airport.

Most of the Arlington outages were concentrated in several neighborhoods north of Langston Blvd, though another outage has been reported in the Columbia Heights neighborhood south of Columbia Pike.

In all, Dominion said nearly 55,000 customers are in the dark in Northern Virginia, including 6,630 in Alexandria and 20,612 in Fairfax County.

A High Wind Warning was in effect for the area until 10 p.m.

As of midnight, the number of outages in Arlington was down to just over 300.
