Video: U.S. Marshals arrest wanted man steps from Ballston Metro station

A man wanted in two jurisdictions by federal authorities was taken into custody in Ballston earlier this week.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service arrested 22-year-old Tyler Jordan Clendenen on Tuesday, mere feet from the entrance to the Ballston Metro station.

Clendenen, who is wanted in Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties in Maryland, faces a litany of charges ranging from armed robbery to unlawful motor vehicle use, the Marshals Service said in a statement.

Clendenen was seen riding as a passenger inside a vehicle by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, leading the task force to close in on the suspect, according to federal law enforcement.

Video captured by a bystander and shared with ARLnow showed a black sedan boxed in by numerous unmarked vehicles at the intersection of N. Stuart Street and 9th Street N.

With the sedan surrounded by armed officers shouting commands, a man who appeared to be Clendenen eventually emerged from the vehicle and surrendered to authorities.

Clendenen, who approached officers with his hands up, appeared to have his legs swept out by one officer, knocking him to the ground, the video showed.

Clendenen was booked into the Arlington County Detention Facility on Tuesday afternoon. He will appear in Arlington General District Court for an arraignment today (Thursday), with the expectation that he will eventually be extradited to Maryland.

In all, Clendenen faces charges for first-degree assault with a firearm, armed robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime, unlawful motor vehicle use, resisting arrest, failure to obey a lawful order and theft — all in Maryland.

Clendenen does not currently face criminal charges in Virginia. He was previously convicted of multiple traffic-related charges in Fairfax County, resulting in a temporary suspension of his driver’s license and a nearly $2,000 fine in 2021.
