Downed trees knock out power, block traffic in parts of Arlington

Two large downed trees caused traffic and power woes in separate parts of Arlington this morning.

The first, on the 2400 block of S. Walter Reed Drive near Shirlington, fell last night around 9 p.m., taking down utility lines, knocking out the power to nearby homes and businesses, and completely blocking the road.

The tree and the lines were still there this morning, and nearly 200 customers were reported to still be in the dark as of publication time.

Elsewhere in Arlington, a large tree came down across Spout Run Parkway around 5 a.m., blocking the busy connector road to the GW Parkway at the start of the morning commute.

It took just over an hour for the tree to be removed by National Park Service personnel, a local resident tells ARLnow.

“Hats off to Park Police and their crew for clearing the downed tree on Spout Run northbound at 6:15am today,” said Deb Ramos. “They were on scene in an hour from my 5am call.”

The trees came down amid rainy weather that has thoroughly soaked the ground. Additional showers and storms are possible today, the National Weather Service said, though “heavy rain will not be as widespread as Tuesday.”
