A former substitute teacher at Washington-Liberty High School was indicted last week for allegedly engaging in a two-year sexual relationship with one of his students.
An Arlington grand jury indicted Timothy Thomas McGhee, 47, on a charge of taking indecent liberties with a minor.
He is scheduled to appear in Arlington circuit court later this week. No trial date has been formally set.
McGhee reportedly developed a personal relationship with one of his students, who was then 16 years old, in the fall of 2022. The two met daily, both inside and outside of school, before the relationship turned physical, prosecutors allege.
In the initial instance, according to court documents, McGhee exposed himself to the minor while the two were inside of his vehicle in a parking lot on N. Glebe Road.
Multiple sexual encounters reportedly followed, both inside of McGhee’s vehicle and at the high schooler’s Arlington residence.
In May 2023, prosecutors allege that the teen accompanied McGhee on a drive to Chicago where, again, the pair reportedly engaged in sexual activity. She was 17 years old at the time.
“She had told her mother that someone in Mr. McGhee’s family had died and that Mr. McGhee wanted company for the long drive to Chicago for the funeral,” court documents say. “She said her mother allowed her to go on the trip with Mr. McGhee.”
McGhee frequently discussed religion with the teenager, court documents say — telling her that he “wanted to marry someone who was Christian” and leaving her “small pieces of paper that contained references to Jesus,” despite her Muslim faith.
When the high schooler was 17, McGhee is alleged to have purchased a diamond ring for her.
Prosecutors say the victim ended the relationship in December 2024. McGhee was arrested in January.
