Rare Bird Coffee Roasters plans new location in Westover

Westover may soon be home to the second location of a popular Falls Church cafe.

The owners of Rare Bird Coffee Roasters have applied for a permit to open a new location at 5870 Washington Blvd, in the same strip mall as Village Sweet and Stray Cat Cafe. They plan to fill a vacancy left by the former Westover Cleaners.

Rare Bird’s coffee is from small importers

  • The cafe’s menu features typical espresso drinks and baked goods like kouign-amann, a flaky French pastry served plain or topped with cardamom sugar.
  • Rare Bird sources coffee from small importers, roasts it in-house and sells it for take-home use. Countries of origin include Mexico, Colombia and Ethiopia.
  • “Our approach towards coffee is one of quality and preservation,” its website reads. “Everything we do, from sourcing coffee to roasting, is in pursuit of maintaining these goals.”

Rare Bird also hosts activities

  • The Falls Church cafe doubles as an art exhibit, hosting seasonal shows by local artists on a three-month rotation.
  • The cafe also hosts private courses like a $125 Latte Art for Beginners, limited to two guests.
