Ten new food disposal bins have been installed around Arlington, further expanding composting options for people in apartments and condos.
The new bins were installed last week in Pentagon City and Colonial Village, on Columbia Pike and at the Court House and Clarendon Metro stations. They bring county’s total number of collection machines up to 24.
To use the bins, residents must download the Bigbelly Smart Compost app to view available locations, then scan a QR code to unlock the bins and dispose of waste.
Acceptable materials for the bins include all food scraps, food-soiled napkins and paper towels, cooking oil, coffee filters and coffee grounds.
Between the initiative’s start in July 2024 and early May, more than 89,000 pounds of food material was placed in the bins. More than 2,000 people are participating in the app-driven initiative.
Organic materials retrieved from the bins are taken to Shirlington, where they are composted into topsoil and mulch.
