‘Withered Fig’ menswear store plans first brick-and-mortar location in Falls Church

After eight years in business online, a Northern Virginia-based men’s clothing shop is preparing to open its first physical location in Falls Church.

Withered Fig is a small business retailer specializing in “premium menswear” and imported garments. It’s currently only an e-commerce site, but owner Richard Lin told ARLnow he hopes to open the new shop early next year at 255 W. Falls Station Blvd, on the ground floor of The Oak condominiums.

“It’s definitely been a dream of mine to open a retail store,” Lin said. “It’s pretty cool to see something that started out of [my family’s] one-bedroom condo now becoming a retail store.”

Withered Fig’s clothes have a vintage feel

  • The store sells pieces from two dozen international brands, with a focus on vintage-inspired garments and raw denim from Japan.
  • “These are menswear styles that have history to them, or they’re inspired from previous military designs,” Lin said. “It’s intended to wear and age well.”
  • Lin said he is interested in items created for longevity and quality, and some of his favorite designs come from the World War II era.

Lin founded the store in 2017

  • He launched the business out of his Merrifield condominium, later acquiring a personal warehouse to keep inventory and receive customers.
  • “Everything was pretty much done at home,” Lin said. “Early on, it was pretty manageable, but as I grew, it sort of got out of hand.”
  • Lin said he looks forward to joining the West Falls development. His new store will provide about 1,085 square feet of space for browsing.
