Columbia Pike roadwork nears finish line, shoots for completion by end of year

Years of construction on Columbia Pike are finally nearing a conclusion, with county staff targeting “substantial completion” by the end of this year.

Crews have finished construction on five segments of the busy corridor, and only two segments remain in “heavy construction,” county spokesperson Claudia Pors said in a recent project update. These stretches of the Pike run between S. Garfield Street and S. Quinn Street.

“Right now, crews are working on reconstructing sidewalks, leveling pavement and installing equipment for signal poles and light poles,” she said.

County webpages for the final two segments promise wider sidewalks, street trees, new streetlights and better traffic signals, including a full traffic signal at the intersection of the Pike and S. Rolfe Street.

The county is currently coordinating with utility companies including Comcast and Dominion to remove old poles and equipment. This will let the county seal remaining holes and move on to final paving.

“Thank you for your patience as we work toward completion at the end of the year,” Pors said.
