Close call: video shows scooter rider narrowly avoiding crash

A scooter rider narrowly avoided serious injury or death this morning, in an incident caught on camera.

The traffic camera video, posted on social media (below) by local public safety watcher Dave Statter, shows the rider entering the intersection of S. Arlington Mill Drive and S. Walter Reed Drive, in front of an oncoming car.

The rider, who was crossing against the light, bails out just before the scooter collides with the side of a white SUV. The rider is seen falling to the pavement while the SUV driver slams on the brakes and comes to a stop in the middle of the intersection, before getting out to check on the rider.

Later in the video fire personnel and police can be seen checking on the rider, as an ambulance sits waiting nearby.

“Injuries not reported as serious,” Statter said.

The intersection, near Shirlington, was also the scene of another caught-on-camera crash earlier this year.
