TRAFFIC ALERT: Key Bridge closed again Friday

As happened during last night’s rush hour, Key Bridge again closed to traffic heading into D.C. Friday morning.

The closure was announced at around 10:15 a.m. and appears to be associated with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington. The Ukrainian embassy is in Georgetown, near the entrance to the Key Bridge. The bridge was also closed for a few hours in August due to a Zelensky visit.

More on the visit, from the Associated Press:

President Donald Trump is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for talks at the White House on Friday. The U.S. leader is signaling he’s not ready to agree to sell Kyiv a long-range missile system that the Ukrainians say they desperately need. The meeting comes a day after Trump had a lengthy phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In recent days, Trump had shown openness to selling Ukraine long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, even as Putin warned against it. Following Thursday’s call with Putin, Trump appeared to downplay the prospects of Ukraine getting the missiles.

Northbound traffic on N. Lynn Street in Arlington was diverted onto lanes that lead back to N. Fort Myer Drive and a ramp to the GW Parkway.

“All lanes of Key Bridge heading into and out of Washington, DC, are shut down for an unknown duration,” said an Arlington Alert message “Expect delays and seek an alternate route.”

As of 2:25 p.m., the bridge was reported to be back open, but the inbound lanes to D.C. were closed again about an hour later.

The closures “are expected to last in to the PM rush hour,” said the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination Program, via social media. “Avoid the area.”
